I used to party with these guys in the mid-90s. First time I ever saw them was in 1989 in the basement of a condemned building. It was a sort of sit in protest thing. Police broke it up with tear gas and it became a riot in the streets. I was a freshman at Cal.

It was years later that I met them through a girlfriend and her roommates. Also met and hung out with GreenDay through the same circle if friends.

I'll remember that next time I take a 356 in a hard curve and have it break free. Driving a slow car fast has it's own level of fun. Driving what is supposed to be a quintessential sports car, the 911, and being underwhelmed is a whole other level of boring. And in comparison to the 993, the 911 before the 996, it's night and day.

Every time I see one I’m struck by just how ugly the 993 is compared to pretty much anything that came before it.

Driving a slow car fast, AKA driving slowly.

The 993 isn't ugly. But its definitely uglIER than what came before and after it.

I’ll admit to partiality since I have one, but I think in direct front shots the 996 looks better than the 993. YMMV and all that.

I assumed you were the typical 70 year old poster here.
Had no idea you were under 50 crowd.

That early Metallica gig is not listed here. Strange.

Wood, I'm closer to 52 than 51 currently, so not ancient, but old enough!

The show I mentioned might have been in 1987, rather than 1986 (not sure now). If I remember correctly, the venue was called the Peony Park Ballroom. It was about the size of a small movie theater. The opening band was Armored Saint, (one of my favorite, lessor known bands from that era, that is still producing tunage, when John Bush, the lead singer, is not playing with other bands, such as Anthrax), and the lead guitarist, David Prichard, died shortly after from leukemia.

This is for the Rawk!
Let me know your favorite one.

Anyway, there is a lot of interesting metal being made. Here are some recent (in the past 5 years or so except for a few) examples that I find compelling or fun to listen to:

POPULAR VIKING METAL
Amon Amarth. These guys are big now.
https://youtu.be/Ndu33Uv7Aco

REAL VIKING METAL
TYR. They are descended from Vikings and live in the Faroe Islands. They sing some of their songs in Faroese dialect:

https://youtu.be/SXjF9po2hYk

MAORI METAL
Alien Weaponry. New band from New Zealand. Like Viking metal, but for Kiwis. They are getting a lot of play on XM Liquid Metal
https://youtu.be/5kwIkF6LFDc

HEROIC BATTLE POWER METAL
Sabaton. From Sweden. All of their songs are about historic battles. I could have seen them play live in Seattle last week but was too lazy to go downtown.
https://youtu.be/HkbG39-T4H0
You cannot escape from the Handsome Italian! https://youtu.be/gwj9YPmrLsQ
A tribute to the B17 and other metal bands: https://youtu.be/f6npKLMK9fo

GUTTURAL SLUDGE DEATH METAL WITH WHAMMY BAR ABUSE
From Portland. I kinda dig these guys. Had them on the stereo while installing the bumper.
https://youtu.be/MWcWnLGfQCc
https://youtu.be/wAHkYwDqARg

PROGRESSIVE DEATH METAL FROM UKRAINE WITH A FEMALE VOCALIST
Jinjer. They have been getting a lot of play on XM Liquid Metal
https://youtu.be/BROMMobZVbQ

TOP QUALITY NO BULL**** METAL FROM A MASTER
Matt Pike is a master at keeping the spirit of the Motorhead-esque power trio alive. He keeps putting out better and better hard-hitting rocking metal without resorting to cliches or gimmicks. He doesn't like shirts, but if you don't like High on Fire, you don't like American metal.
https://youtu.be/op9E1fhyV2Y
https://youtu.be/89h-X-tZa_w

Matt Pike is also the force behind Sleep, the most seminal stoner metal band of all time, but that's a discussion for another time.

RIFF-O-RAMA
Not recent, and their work can vary from dreck to awesome, but The Sword's album Age of Winters is one of the best straight-up metal albums of the past 20 years.
A Sword of fire and an axe of cold
Vision of the sibyll has foretold
Armies gather on the battle-plain
All will fall and earth will die in flame
https://youtu.be/PWih21P0mEs

MASTODON
Pinnacle of catchy hyper-technical syncopated but groove-heavy modern metal. Lots of bands try to sound like them but can't pull it off.
https://youtu.be/fnwZca8z9II
Trippy atmospheric metal: https://youtu.be/amagrxXDBdk
https://youtu.be/eSUnWYiQUuQ

DOWN
Nola stoner metal supergroup. Pepper Keenan can do no wrong. Thickest tone ever. Still satisfies 20+ years later.

https://youtu.be/NuEX2n3YDfA

Wood, I had no idea you were into tunes such as that - very cool! ***forum butt pinch*** I'm going to check out your list (have only heard of a couple on there).

Some bands I've discovered in the past couple of years that I really like are Nightwish (especially the current, Floor Jansen lineup), Arch Enemy, Rage of Light, Synlakross, Delain, Any Given Day, The Agonist, The Slot (a Russian band that I mainly like for their insane singer), and a few others that I might be forgetting about right now.

Regular people think our cars are fugly on the outside also.
However, they are not the people who will be buying enthusiast cars.
