Barrett-Jackson auctioning off GT3-RS

I walked through almost 2,000 cars at the 2020 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction this weekend and found nearly 40 Porsche's up for bid this week. With some very unique Porsche's like a 1962 356B Super 90 Cab (1 of 58), a 911 GT3-RS signed by Pinky Lai, and a half dozen beautiful 993's on the docket. However, I found a Boxster, and several 996's, some with salvage titles that will be crossing the auction block as well. Is it just me or do you think Boxsters and 996's are models that are not quite unique or classic car status to be at an auction like this?

Here are links to my two videos of the Porsche's at this years auction.

Brian,

As a consistent auction attendee for the last 20 years. (over 50 badges hanging in my office)
I will just say that the size and scope of these auctions has grown. I'm not saying this is a good or bad thing. It seems that the promoters need more days to keep the festivities going. There is a limit to the quality of cars available every year. When you factor in the number of auctions......... ....something has to give. You used to see nothing but quality at Barrett Jackson now you see a bit of everything.

I agree that Boxers and 996's are probably not quite a classic car, yet. But a 1957 Chevy was a big deal in 1977 to a lot of people. So maybe a 2000 996 is a big deal to someone in 2020.

Just my 2 cents.

Gooding & Co and Bonhams usually have very nice Porsches. Sometimes RM as well. For years I avoided B-J because they didn’t sell many Euro or exotic cars. They have made an effort over the past few years and diversified with their premium Salon Cars, more exotics, and a sprinkling of European cars. Not my favorite auction but kudos to them for making the effort to attract more than just muscle car buyers.

The first Porsche was sold yesterday, it was a 2002 996 C4 Cab going for $13,000.00 + $1,300.00 in auction fees for a total cost of $14,300.00 The car has 115,000 miles. I was expecting some of these 996's to go for over $20k as they are at a collectors auction, but maybe I was wrong.

The first few days of these larger auctions are beyond boring - thank heaven for DVR capability. Tons of cars (or should I say trucks and jeeps) that one would not give a second look at in a parking lot, but someone people are fascinated with them under the lights and glitz of an auction.

Seriously? What would you pay for that C4 Cab with 115K miles with all the unknowns that come as a result of an auction? $14-15K in that environment seems about right.

Forget the collector nomenclature. It's still just money.

Authorized Porsche dealers would pass on selling that car on their lot. Straight to Manheim inventory.
