What’s this SC worth
Looking at an SC. Seller wants a blank offer. History: he bought the car back in 2006 with 135k miles on it. Spent $70k on mechanicals and cosmetics, including a complete engine rebuild and a bare metal re-spray with 3 coats of primer. He let the car sit from 2014 to 2017 and then put another $10k to freshen everything back up: brakes, new tires, AC compressor, sump pump work, and shifter bushings. For some reason, the odometer was replaced when the engine was rebuilt. It shows 11,000 miles. The big drawback on the car in that the roof has some minor paint imperfections or contaminants and I’m not crazy about the replaced odometer. He has all the documentation on all the work. Pics:

Probably not what the seller thinks it’s worth.

Haven’t driven it. I plan to do an exhaustive PPI. But just wanted to get some opinions, based on the information being what it is, before I throw him an offer. I’m out of state.

For me, no more than 45 and I'd be more interested in ones that are 30-35. SC is a great car but there are lots out there. If seller is asking you to set the price he hasn't done any homework and he's not going to like what the market says I think.

I offered him 40k 2 years ago and he accepted but then he decided he liked the car too much and didn’t want to sell, period. He has since put $10k into it.

Still worth $35-40k to my mind.

I have a feeling the seller is fishing. Having spent $80K in 14 years on a car that was worth $15K or less when he bought it doesn't sound like an astute investment to me.
Replacing speedos isn't uncommon. They break. I had one sent out once by my shop and he asked me what I wanted it to read when it came back. ![]() Look at all the docs carefully. Shops almost always write down the mileage when they take a car in and you can usually get a pretty good idea looking at receipts. Plus, you want to know what added up to $70K and how it added up. If all that work checks out I'd offer him the $40k again. It's worth it with all that work already performed. A great car that needs nothing is unusual.

What a gorgeous car.
If you buy it, just reset the odo back to 146k. Make sure it matches the CarFax. Can you itemize the $70k spent? If he's got the receipts to back it up, I bet he can get $60k or $70k or $80k or more for it.

Beautiful car. One of my personal favorite SC colors, and has all the bright work and polished center Fuchs to match. $45-50k all day long.

Yes, I can itemize the receipts. He emailed me 20 pages of documentation.

I missed the year. 78 or 79?
I'm thrilled with these high estimates.

Still at best, an excellent driver.
$50K tops. Seller's wasting your time regardless.

I had a 1978 in Petrol blue with a tan interior, loved it, so I hope this checks out for you.
On the other hand, if I were buying this example, my very first official acts would be to: a)replace the shift knob with an original, b)send the gauges off for a good cleaning, c)buy the correct floor mats, d)pull the driver seat and have a professional seat shop get the excess stuffing out of it, e) figure out how to remove the non-factory window tint, and that is just a list based on these few photos! The point is, even if it passes a PPI, any of us fanatic Porsche people will figure out how to spend another $5000. I figure you are one of us since the paint is already bugging you....so add f) block sand and buff paint to remove imperfections. The lists we have seldom end. |

Do you also have $70k worth of service receipts for your car, including an engine rebuild?
