1979 911SC Targa - Another Valuation Checkkk

Hey Everyone,

Hope you all have been good.

Another car stumbled upon me and I'm thinking about pulling the trigger.

It's a 1979 911SC Targa that runs and drives good.
- Petrol Blue Metallic special order paint
- Good maintenance records
- Engine was 'tuned up' every few years but never rebuilt
- Interior is in good shape
- Hood needs paint
- Minor cosmetics that needs addressed

I have a recent PPI, all checks out but the engine has leaks in a few of the regular locations. Does drip onto the ground however.

What is a safe bet to pay for this car in your opinion to not lose?

If I buy it, I'm most likely going to sell my 912E project.

If I don't sell the 912E, I might just make the car nicer for the next person and sell it on BAT etc. (try your best to hold off on the flipper comments Zzz..)

Let me know what you think it could sell for as is, as well as a top end rebuilt/seal overhaul and paint corrected.

$20-25K and you won't get hurt if all is well, but i doubt you'll get it for that.
The oil leaks are DIY in your case but the paint can be costly. You'll need to go over the car soup to nuts, as you know, and you'll most likely end up fixing everything. Even Targa Tops and their seals usually need to be re-done.

And head studs. I'd have them checked before I buy the car. That could be the deal killer and cost you a bundle.

Nick, thanks for the input as always. But you have to have more faith in me My current agreed price I'm at with the seller is a couple hundred bucks under $25,000 (I have to ship it home so +/- $800 on top of that).

The PPI was OK, but will need some transmission work, I think 3rd gear. See below:

https://dumont-s-llc.shop-ware.com/work_orders/81991476?auth_token=8yBrLKZLb7KxygjeQwET

Anyway, I'd pay for a leak down and for someone to check headstuds before I'd pull the trigger.

Let me know your thoughts. I wish the PPI report had a little more details. Hard to tell from some of those pics.

Transmission needs work too? Someone handing that car off to a P-car mechanic to "fix" could easily run past the purchase price. However, your past endeavors make me think you could do it for less than half of that....let's say $15K, which is low if we include paint.

Now you've got 40 into it and it's worth $45-50 depending on how well you fix it up. Super SC's sell for $65k.

So it depends on how much is wrong, how much you DIY, how much you spend on paint and if you're keeping it or selling it. Something tells me this car will hit the market too after you tinker with it, Mario.

I wouldn’t pay $25k for that car, and I have a soft spot for that color and targas. After you fix it, there’s no profit.

Agreed, there’s no profit and a huge chance of a loss.

Pass.

He asked what price he wouldn't get hurt with, not what price others would pay. Mario is pretty savvy, handy and resourceful. He could flip it for $25k in a heartbeat if it was too much to handle.

He also has a thread on FB where he says the price on the car is $25k plus $800 shipping. And he posted the PPI. Car has needs. I’m just saying that’s too much. And I’d pass.

Understood. I'd pass too. I hate Targas and I'd have to farm everything out anyway.

Valid points across the board fellas..

I miss the drop top life after selling my S2000 a few months back, so a Targa would be cool for the time being but I have to agree with you guys.

This one is a lot to gamble with especially when I have enough on my plate.

We will see what else pops up..

Again, if everyone says on thing, I say bet the other way. Everything in life is a gamble. Everything. You're young enough and have the time.

$25K for that car with maintenance records is probably right on.

As others would have said, there is a strong possibility of those studs being broken, but that does not mean that it does not run well.

It looks like everything is there. It's not a car that you could not sort.

I don't mind the paint so much. It's that tail. I'd buy it and immediately sell the tail.

It looks more honest in some ways because of all the paint fade. I do not think you will find a car like this for this kind of money really anywhere in July 2023.

Sell the 912E.

If you’re talking about buying and owning it, I tend to agree with you. However, Mario does fix and flips, and as such there’s not enough meat on the bone and a couple potential financial gotchas that could be lurking on this one.

Yes, you are right. I would keep it and own it. Not sell it.

Honestly since this targa is pretty much a driver, I was planning on selling the 912E like you mentioned.

I might revisit this car in the future when the remodel “slows down”

This month is going to be wild with the flooring and kitchen going in next week.. and baby due end of August.

You never know what you’re going to get. April slept through the night starting the 4th night of her life. Penny spent a week in the nicu and didn’t sleep more than 4 hours at a time for more than a year. And I didn’t sleep more than 6 continuous hours for the same period. I used to sleep 9-midnight and 4-8am.

I'd buy it. Probably better than mine and I drive mine all the time. I agree though if its for a flip might not be worth it but to keep for personal use I would get it. I would lose the tail though.
