Selling Canadian car in US
Hi Gang
I have a 1985 911 I want to sell I will be listing it here, but also a friend of mine has a car club in Tennessee that he may show the car at My question is what is involved on my end if I sell it to someone in the states in terms of import duties to the US and getting the car titled for the new owner The car was originally a US car that was imported into Canada in 2008 Lets say a sell it here on pelican to someone and they want it shipped - where and how do the import and title exchange occur? And aside from import and title and possiblr is there anything Im not considering that would need to be done? Thank you!!! ![]() |

Since the car was already imported to the US, there would be no duty due. The current tariff circus introduces a bit of uncertainty since you never know how a customs agent may interpret something, but this is still true on paper. The buyer would need to show that it was a US car - this can be done with prior registration records or even just compliance stickers on the car.
Driving a car across the border yourself is straightforward and simple (I’ve done it). Having it trucks across likewise, except you’re paying someone else to do everything. If the buyer comes to you, signing the registration over is done at your provincial registration/licensing office. I am not sure whether the car can be sold by your friend if he drove it to the US for the show

The 25-year rule only exempts a car from being required to conform with US safety requirements (it's 21 years for emissions.) When I imported my Saab, then 32 years old and an original Canadian-market car, in 1917, I paid the usual duty of around 2.5%
If 25+ year cars are no longer required to pay a duty then it is a result of some language in the new tariff regime with Canada. 25+ cars shipped from overseas are still paying duty (sometimes 2.5%, sometimes 12.5%, it seems to depend on how the customs officer classifies it), and I doubt Canada is any different.

Original 2.5% + an additional 10% is what I just paid on a Japanese imported 993.
