Old VW's going for more then Porsches?

http://www.classicvws.com/sale/gordie23.htm

$60,000 for a restored 1962 VW bus

I've seen them selling for 35-40k but 60k is getting up there.

How much do 356's from that era go for?

It probably has a lot to do with the costs involved, a restoration project plus parts/labor value could add up to $60k or close to and for the right buyer, the owner will get his/her value.

I've forgotten a lot about the buses. I had a '67 walk thru, but it was not a 21 window. That is a lot of money, but Chris is correct. if you commissioned a restoration of this caliper, it would cost you that easily. I see the bus has sold. I wonder how close to asking was paid. VW also had a bus that had side doors on both sides. I think one of those would have brought the big money, especially turned out as nice as this one. West Coast has been around a long time. They have a good rep; that counts too for a bigger sale price.

I've had a few bugs over the years and was looking to get a nice two-tone '67 Ghia. All of the examples I found cost the same, if not more, than nice '66-'67 912's (eight years ago). Most restored '67 bugs are in the $8K plus range too. They're not the $500 last-forever-college-student transportation anymore.

I went with the 912 - superior in every way to any VW of that era. I'm not talking about nostalgia, just pure craftsmanship and everything else that makes a Porsche great.

Here is a 55 Bardoor Bus going for $65,000 on The Samba.

Still needs work.

56 for $23,000 seems a bit more reasonable

This 52 Bug project is a good deal !

Just needs paint and assembly.

I'm still holding onto my 73 Thing since I've purchased it back in 89.

If you track like-for-like, you'd look at the most desirable 356s vs the most desirable uses. Do that, and prices are comparable for Carreras and convertibles.
