Change of Color
 

Guys,

My car is a 1969 911E. It has all the S options, and I put 15 inch fuchs onto it.

The car was originally Polo red. In the early 1970s, it was repainted Corvette Daytona yellow. I have owned the car since 1975.

I am seriously thinking of doing the body work (the car was mechanically restored).

I like the car in yellow. If I repaint the car in yellow, should the car have any less value than the original Polo red? and if so, how much?

Hi Dom,

Yes a color change from original will decrease the market value of your car to some degree, at least here in the States. A guess might be a 10-20% hit depending on what yellow color you choose. A period Porsche yellow would be the best choice if you are not going back to Polo red. I am not sure off the top of my head if Signal Yellow was offered in '69 but that is a stunning color in person. One of my favorites.

Original paint from the factory is what's really worth the most. Your car has already been repainted in a different color. So, the 'damage has been done' already (so to speak) with the previous paint job.

I don't think you'll hurt the current value of the car with painting it yellow.

I disagree. :) If he goes back to the original color, nobody will ever know it was yellow, assuming the job was done right. You can sell it as a repaint in the original color which will demand a higher price than a non original color.

That said, if you paint it, you should get something that YOU like, not some future owner. I recommend going with a yellow or other color you like that was available in 69, to limit the damage to the value.

I tried to upload a photo, but picture sizes are over 2 Mb.

If I have the car done, all of the paint will come off. So the former yellow will not be a problem.
