I used to laugh at the emails and ebay meaasges I would get from other bidders on an item I was bidding on telling what a scam artist the seller was so I would not bid on the item. Particularlly funny when I had already done business with the seller without issue and these guys were trying to keep the price down to buy the item on the cheap

Ebay changed their policies about six months ago because of fraudulent "2nd chance offer" scams. Now during an auction ALL user id's are scrambled (on items over $100, IIRC) to everyone's eyes except the auction lister. It's now impossible to see who you are bidding against until after the auction ends. Then it shows the true identity of the bidders who were bidding.

At this point in the game the only real value for the seller to make an auction private is to keep the buyer's identity a secret after the fact. For certain high dollar items, that makes sense.

Actually, all bidders are kept anonymous since the change, even after the auction ended.
on any amount, even $1.00, we no longer see who ended up winning!
