Back dating dated?

Hello all, I have a wonderful condition 80 SC Targa that I have just finished revitalizing esthetically (dash/seats, moldings, rubber, targa, seals, belts, wheels, glass, etc, etc). My plan originally was to back date it just a few years to replicate a 76/77 Carrera 3.0 (not originally sold in the US). I have backdated in some degree every late model 911 I have had unless it was actually an early Carrera already, and they have always been well received, but I am wondering if these 911SC's are not just around the corner from standing on their own merits. I mean, how many can be out there still in this condition? Surely a better economy (when ever that may be) will reveal these cars to be the next generation of 'early Porsches'. God knows they don't make them like this anymore!
Let me know what you think...

I think it looks pretty sweet as it is, and I agree with the SCs and Carreras taking off in value eventually. Just like the long hoods and SWBs, the more original the better.

I don't know much about SC's but am very fond of '84 thru '89 Carreras. IMHO one of the finest road cars ever. Simple, good mileage, and will travel at high rates of speed. I always try and keep mine in stock condition.
I'm not smarter than the teams of German engineers that designed them.

That is a very nice Targa

I think given enough time, anything air-cooled is going to become "collectible". Of course that's a loose definition and would require the cars be very orginal and very nice. I do agree that appreciation on 911sc's and 3.2 Carrera isn't very far off; probably a few to 5 years. But noone is ever going to get rich by putting them away in a warehouse either.

Looking at the pictures of this car, it appears to be quite original. I wouldn't touch a thing even though my preference is RSR bumpers over impact bumpers. If I owned this car I would leave it as it stands. It's very pretty.

Only back date it if that's what YOU want. No one else will care, much less pay extra for it, unless they pay less because its not original. I think it is a waste of a perfectly nice original car. You can't install original.

Just to clarify, any backdating I do, usually is undo-able. That is why the replicated car for this one would be a Euro Carrera middy. Flag mirrors wouldn't have to be removed, rear decklid would be retained, and graphics are vinyl.
What I originally had in mind for it was something very similar to this real 75 US carrera I restored a few years ago, but now I just don't know. The color on this 80 SC I wanted to tell myself was Gold, but it really is more of an 80's metro-sexual kinda color....which got me thinking, why not just go with that? I mean at this point, with it's period chocolate brown interior, it's screamin' Angel Flights, Disco and racing Pontiac Trans Ams.

Your car looks very nice and no doubt is more desirable in stock condition. As far as thinking they're going to "take off" in value IMO thats a big mistake. They wont be going down in value but they don't represent any sort of investment opportunity by any means.

OK, I couldn't help myself. I just get too bored too fast. I had some negative Porsche side decals made up in Chocolate Brown to match the interior...

What a nice looking example of a car we all love, the decals are a nice addition and easily removed. Enjoy the car!
