What would you pay?

Hi guys looking for some advise here. I am thinking of trading in my 82 sc against this RS reproduction. Dont know the year of the tub but been informed it is based on an E. It has a 2.7 motor claimed 214bhp. Essentially the car is brand new having just been built by renowned Porsche builder Timothy Abbot http://www.abbotcars.com (South African), I am waiting on more details at the monent as it would mean flying to Johannesburg to see it I am in Cape Town. Asking price is set at R350,000 or $44,000 if you prefer.

Wow 75 views and not one opinion thats strange. I see there are two on the bay one RS clone Porsche : 911:eBay Motors (item 230392640673 end time Nov-05-09 13:58:59 PST) for a buy it now of $60K
and the other an S Porsche : 911:eBay Motors (item 270477409933 end time Nov-05-09 10:31:22 PST) to RSR for $48.5K.
If the one I want is up to snuff then I am in the ballpark as they say. Also see a 73 RS touring Porsche : 911:eBay Motors (item 220487544296 end time Nov-28-09 05:28:25 PST) on for $295K and a 73 E Porsche : 911:eBay Motors (item 320439978227 end time Nov-14-09 11:14:41 PST) for Roger Penske at $139,990 serious money there.

Its really hard to give an opinion as there is not enough detail on the RS rep. Also not sure on values in SA compared to the US.

Ok. Here is a thought. My Father In Law was at one time a serious collector of antique autos. He bought a beautiful jag roadster from a known "restorer." The car is not that great. It is obvious that it was done with a profit and loss consideration. End result. Probably not the best deal.

On the other hand, he bought a 57 corvette from an enthusiast. When he added up the receipts, it turns out the parts were $5000 less than the total cost of the car. Seven years of labor sold for $5k. That is a NICE car. It was built with no thought of selling.

I don't know if this helps, but it might be worth thinking about.

I would contact the builder/restorer. Get the lowdown on the car. Hopefully you will get the truth. What to pay? Hmmmmmmm, I guess one factor is how much are you getting for the SC and is this entire issue worth the trouble.
If you have a nice SC then why get rid of it?

Cal44 I dont really want to get rid of the SC I love that car but she is going to need an engine re-build in the next year also gearbox while I am in there. I am worried that the cost of doing the re-build will be prohibitlivley expensive as it is not cheap here in SA maintaining a classic Porsche. I dont have enough garage space ether would love to have both.

I would shine the replica and stick with the real thing

If SC brings $14,000. US, then you need an additional $30,000. US to get into the replica RS. For half that, you could rebuild your motor and reseal/resyncro the transaxle. And, you would know what you have.

TW and 73.5 you are both right! I thought about this long and hard and last night made the decision to keep the SC. It is such a good little car and I have done a lot to get her running nicely. The fact that she is an 82 Ferry Special of which only 266 were built and the fact that she is a Targa means she is rather special. I am going to get the interior brought back to original spec (PO at some stage changed it to black) and then next year redo the motor and trans and hang onto her. Thanks all for the advise.
