Pieces US1968L targa with S chassis and S engine Sportomatic

The car is in pieces but 70-75 percent complete. matching aluminum S engine and sportomatic transmission. This is a US 911L Targa, but everything points to S including engine, trans and chassis. I'm not sure what its value and not sure what I'm dealing with. Vin:11855122, Why would Porsche send a us spec car with complete S sportomatic, I'm not sure where to begin I'm sure I will soon know though. Thanks.

How do you know it is a matching number engine? Kardex? No USA 911 would have come in legally without emission controls in 1968. Is it a type 901/02 engine? A '68 911L USA Sporto should have a type 901/17. A ROW 911S w/ Sporto should have a type 901/08 engine.

That serial number is from a 1968 911S (ROW) with Sporto engine, type 901/08, but it does not match the VIN of the chassis, which is a USA 911L, according to the most reliable sources. I would guess that it has been swapped sometime in the past. That chassis should have a 130 HP type 901/17 engine in it. A Kardex from the factory would clear this up. It is a rare car and a rare engine, but from all known references, they were never assembled in the same vehicle from the factory, which may or may not influence your plans for the car. Matching numbers are more important to some people than others. You can probably count on collectors not looking twice at it, and a possible 10-20% degradation in value from an original "matching numbers" example in the resale market.

This is the same car that Stefan from GTS is asking about on the Early S Registry forum, no? See that thread for more details.
