1989 Speedster - yes or no?
I found an 89 black / tan speedster with 57 K miles listed for $ 65000. Price seems reasonable / in the ball park compared to asking prices in eBay listings and AutoTrader ads.
My question is whether or not this would be a car that would give the same level of driving fun and excitement as the 82-89 911 or the 95-97 993? Although its basically a 'regular' 911 it definitely is a sun-friendly car only. I know there is a big difference in price as compared to a 911 from the 80's, but the uniqueness of the 89 speedster has its own attraction. Is the thinking that the large price premium for a speedster really worth it as compared to getting a nicely sorted 911? Any thoughts? I have acquired a few vehicles lately (Mercedes and Triumph) but still looking for a proper P car for the garage. Unfortunately all over the map on the P cars as I have chased leads on most types: 356, through the 912 and early 911, luv the 72 911 and in to the SC's and 80's 911 and up to the 993's. Am sure something will catch my wallet at some point, but still not finding the absolute 'perfect' car for me. jb Alberta, Canada Last edited by ArcticOne; 06-27-2010 at 09:02 AM.. Reason: addition |

I think I know the car you are referring to. That dealer (Alex) sells some nice 911's and has been at it for a while. Have you driven a variety of 911's? If you haven't, I would do this before you go any further. Also, you don't seem to be too smitten with the speedster and say that you haven't found the "perfect" car for you. 65K is a lot of money for a car that isn't "the one". This is also getting into 993 twin turbo territory -$$.
I think most typical speedster owners are collectors or are those that have lusted after them for a long time or both. IMHO of course.

Of those that I like, I have driven various 911's excepting the earliest models and the 993.
For me, not interested in the twin turbo thing. Am not in to cars for crazy power and speed. Speedster is interesting because of its uniqueness as it suits my personality. Am looking for something to drive on a weekend basis in the summer. Something will eventually come out and I do enjoy the search. Could have likely bought several by now but the hunt is enjoyable, as are the travels, plus I filled up my garage with Mercedes and an old GT6. jb |

I drove a Turbo look Speedster, and it was a wonderful car, and I prefer the turbo look package on a speedster. I don't know what the current price on this model is, but at that price it must be in perfect running order and pristine.
The thing is, that car is getting to the point where it is no longer a low mileage car. That could mean maintenance in the foreseeable future, and it probably means that you would want to keep your yearly mileage down to protect your ''investment''. As has been said, at that price point you have a lot of cars to choose from. My gut tells me that if you bought it and wanted to resell, you would take a loss. But I am not in the market for such a car, so what do I know ? |

BIG Yes!
There are 4 Speedsters for sale currently on EBay..........
8000 miles.......... $89,000 (Did not sell; high bid $67,000) 15000 miles........ $89,000 29500 miles.........$70,000 56000 miles.........Bid to $70,000 & did not meet reserve. Given today's marketplace (Summer) asking does seem to be the current +/- value of a speedster even with higher mileage. Great car with investment potential..... I love them, only G series convertible I would own. I would be tempted to trade one of my early cars!

I have a turbo bodied (U.S) car and love it. They are rare and and very cool looking. The top down driving is fabulous and they are pretty much bullet proof. You should shop around and fine the one you love as you may be keeping it for a loooong time! Good luck.
I will never sell mine! ![]() Last edited by denson; 06-28-2010 at 11:13 AM.. |

As my screen name suggested, I have a 911 (89) speedster. I have also driven a wide variety of 911s (2.7, 3.0, 3.2, 3.6, etc). I can share with you that the 911 Speedster is basically a 3.2 with a G50; however, the sheer enjoyment with the car is uncomparable with the other 911s. The low windshield; the wide body; the clam shell all makes this a very unique car. I drove my car to the Monterey Historic last year and it was an amazing experience.
As far as "investment" goes; I do not believe in "investing" in cars. Too many unforeseen factors, if I really want to invest; I have tons of traditional method to invest. BUT - if you put money into a car and you don't want to lose out; here is the perfect strategy : buy a car that you will ENJOY. If you buy a car just to keep around under cover; not driving it; not enjoying it; then you depend solely on the ROI. On the other hand, if you enjoy the car for the duration of ownership and loss 20% in the end; I don't really see it as a loss; its rental payment for happiness ![]() GOod luck with your hunt. (BTW; i prefer the 89 speedster over the 94 speedster - base on looks only)

True.... Cars have never shown a financial "return" to me. I do make it a policy to try not to go too far underwater which makes me more aware of the value. I also prefer the look of the 89 but the power of the 94 is very enticing.......
