3.0L motor

Thinking about a new engine and am considering selling the 3L I have now and am curious what ya'll ballpark it's value at. Details:

1983 3.0L that from best I can tell via receipts it had the heads rebuilt about 100k miles ago and this included studs, cam regrind (I don't have the specifics to the grind), and everything else checked and refreshed. I have no clue about the case but I suspect it was not split nor has had any work done. The engine starts well, oil usage is within spec, and it runs great. l I haven't had the leak down or compression numbers done but would prior to sale and for this pricing estimate let's presume the numbers are good.

This sale would include the complete engine from the CIS out through the SSI exhaust and 2 in 1 out M&K muffler.

Thanks!

I am by no means an expert, but there was a newly rebuilt 3.0L rebuilt to racing specs with only 60 hours of race time on it for 7-9k on another forum recently. With a rebuild pretty much necessary (being as the last one was 100k ago), I would expect that yours would go for 3-5k? I could be off by a lot. I am fairly new to Porsches in general.

Some thoughts...

I think you need to sell the SSI's & M&K separately to maximize your profit margin. I'd estimate at least $750.00 or so for the SSI's (probably $800.00 to $900.00 if they're in great shape). I'd estimate $500.00 or so for the M&K. You might find a buyer for around $1200.00 for both as well - I would jumped on these last year when I bought mine new.

A good running complete (CIS), but high mile 3.0 should bring $2.5k to $3.5k, it depends quite a bit on the compression/leak down numbers (and demand of course) - maybe a little more on a good day. I just saw one sell for $2.5k in similar condition. I think it's the poor economy and the fact that SC's are on the lower part of the appreciation curve. Also, check for Mahle or KS P&C's - Mahle's are a plus and should bring an extra $500.00 (?) or so. Silly money is still out there for rare early 911 engines (2.2/2.4 "S"??)

You might bargain with a potential buyer to remove some pieces (CIS/Alt/fan, etc.) if they're not needed and lower the price to conclude the sale. The other parts could be sold separately (a hassle, but worth it) to gain a bit of coin back.

Good Luck with the sale. I'd love to stumble upon a, for example, broken head stud high mile 3.0 to play with, but I'm on a budget and would like to spend as little as possible and get Mahle P/C's (I know, fat chance).

UPDATE: Wow, I just noticed a 110k mile 3.0 that has not run for 10 years (alleged to run good prior to a frontal crash) with a 915 transmission (hesitant in 2/3 shift) bid to almost $4k. A so-so 915 might be around $800.00 - $1,000.00, so this engine is right at $3k - with 3 days to go....
