Part-out - expected revenue?
I know this is a pretty popular question from searching - but each car is unique and I really have no idea of 911 costs as I'm more of a 914 guy. I'm trying to sell the car whole (minus engine/tranny and a few other parts) but with no bites - I may have to part it out. However, starting down that road can be extensive and no turning back, especially if something major sells that renders the car unusable.
Any thoughts to how much I could expect for this car if I were to part it out? It is driveable so it does have the core parts - it really just lacks an interior/engine/tranny. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1336779879.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1336779889.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1336779894.jpg No the rear is not purple - camera flash effect. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1336779902.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1336779910.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1336779917.jpg Rear flares have these. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1336779922.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1336779931.jpg Descript: So this car would need an engine, tranny, interior, rear window, seatbelts (they don't lock currently). The interior is a mess of cables. There is no rust except a couple small spots on the bottom of the car where it did punch through with a diameter of maybe an inch or two. If there is any serious interest - I can go through the car taking detailed photos of any good/bad stuff - I haven't been under it in a long time. Somebody added flares and some Boxster wheels with wider rear tires - but did a poor job on the flares (see photo - not sure if it is rust or a bad bondo job, it hasn't changed since I bought it) |
My humble opinion:
You're better to part it out than to try and build it up to sell. The expense of those items it needs will exceed the finished value by a large margin. If you're keeping the engine/gearbox, it is past the point of selling 'whole'. Those are items which once removed make the car "unusable" as you state. I see a few thousand dollars in parts to sell off but it takes a lot of time to do so (as you indicate you understand). Once you say no engine/trans are part of the lump sum, the rest becomes part-out material too, especially considering it needs an interior and body work. This gets expensive in a hurry. Steering wheel $150 Rear reflector $100 Suspension/brakes $300-$800 depending on what it is and condition Wheels $300 Dash/Gauges $200 Various switches and electrical/mechanical widgets throughout $100 Body panels, trim, glass, etc. $200-$800 I'm at $2500 at the high-end of bolt-on bits to sell. If you can sell the roller chassis for that, I think you're doing okay. |
Great post, I appreciate it! Not as high as I was expecting - but it is what it is - didn't buy it for profit.
Also afraid of ending up with a chassis that nobody will buy - would hate to trash it. But plenty of time for it to sell at some point. |
I think PropellerHead is right on. The Targa chassis is not sought after as coupes for track cars. If you can be extremely patient, you may see some $$ for body panels.
