964 Pre-Purchase advice

I would like to get some advice on the 1989 Carrera C4 before I take the plunge! I will be seeing one of these this weekend, which only has 5k miles on a NEW engine (according to recent owner) and new clutch and all. The car appears to be in great shape. Also, owner will be runnning a PPI and comp/leakdown tests. Any and all feedback will be greatly appreciated!

Serge

Be sure what they mean by "new". I assume they mean it has new pistons and cylinders as the 89-90 models had bad ones out of the box and all leak. Just get clarification on that and see how the PPI comes back, otherwise good luck!

Be careful. A lot of electronics and "new" mechanicals in a 964 C4. Do a search on the topic here.

You really should hold out for a 91-92.
93-94 are rare, and slightly uglier (subjective).
Do your homework.

What do you mean the owner will be running a PPI? If he is paying for it or using his mechanic you do not have a guarantee of it not being biased in his favour.

If it is a well known and reputable shop you may have nothing to worry about. However, there is a reason the buyer generally pays for the PPI and uses a mechanic of their choosing, someone commonly different than the mechanic who currently tends to the car.

I am wary about the 'new' engine. I am a huge fan of the '89 as it is an icon. I am just scared at pulling the trigger - ever - because of all the ones I have seen the dash is lit up like the Polar Express, all those 944 warning lights and the AWD lights on for service (these are NOT simple cars)...I tell you though the '89 C4 is sweet though. My best advice is go and get the vibe off both the car and owner and then go from there.
