Drastic situations call for desperate measures
Everything states that my Porsche will not be easily earned.
What serious or funny act of desperation have you made to get your dream car? I need inspiration. |
I'm assuming the purchasing power is the difficulty here... and that's a big assumption. If correct, read on - otherwise this is of no use. And sorry, no funny or ridiculous story here...
The key is saving. Just save your money. Maybe a Saturday night out with the boys? Sure! But drink water!!! Thinking of that dinner at the nice restaurant downtown? Think again! Buy groceries and cook your lady an even better meal! Make conscious decisions, and weigh the importance of ownership against other aspects of your life. That being said, you should really do yourself a favor and not buy the Porsche if you cannot afford it. The purchase price is one thing, but if you can't afford to maintain it, buy a Hyundai. Otherwise, you'll wind up with a neglected Porsche that you can't drive because it's too expensive to repair, which is a helluva expensive paperweight. |
From what I know, price is not the focus in this case, yet.
Sure, I could make him a higher offer, but I don't know why he gave up. He just decided not to sell it. And I already own a Hyundai. I like it, but it is just too confortable! :-) |

How about finding another. There are thousands of others. |
The key was exactly the opposite, as some told me. Keep calm and wait for the next (and better) one.

Timely thread.
About 5 years ago I had zero disposable income but wanted some sort of old sports car. The 911 was, I thought, impossible. I was commuting 80 miles per day and gas was stupid high. I was driving a truck which got about 15mpg. Sold it and picked up a POS 1990 Toyota Celica for $300 and immediately stripped out 300 pounds of weight and began to hypermile it. I was able to get 40mpg and only ever had to replace an alternator, $20 from junkyard. I also did the struts for $220 since it was pogoing big time. Mounted up free tires from the reject pile at the tire store myself. After 80K (200K total) miles of putting up with peoples' comments I gave it away --hailed on, deered on, sunned on, and faded almost to primer. Borrowed half of what I needed (from Dad) to pick up a 911 I happened to be the first call on in 2010. Never once did I subsist solely on ramen noodles..... |
I think a lot of people pass on a a car because it's not "just right". Like many others I want a factory stock Porsche, or at least close to it (engine mods are something else). On my most recent 911 purchase, the car had big aftermarket wheels that I didn't like, a fibergalss tail, clear lenses, a cold air intake and few other bits that were not original.
Lots of people will pass on a car like that and keep looking and looking for just the right car. I bought it, returned it to stock (wheels weren't cheap) and am now enjoying it. I see WTB ads that go on for months, the available cars aren't increasing in number as the years roll on. I think I spent less than eight weeks searching and found it in state and drove it home (unless you're one of those that must have a museum speciman, that can take a while). |
