Porsche 3.2 engine for aircraft use. Pretty much all repurchased & crushed by the fatherland.
Neat items like gear driven cams, dual ignition, others

Plane was a Mooney, I think.

Love the redundant fan belts. This would be a cool thing to have.

Aircraft engines

I read somewhere that Porsche ignored, or did not allow sufficiently for two major factors in the design of an IC engine for aircraft use:
1. The load on the engine is high and constant compared to automobile requirement.
2. The weight of the entire aircraft is impressed across the crankshaft bearing surfaces while underway.

Someone had a nightmare & decided to make these engines all disappear before the lawyers got started..

Anyone here have additional/other information about this project?

This is an amazing statement that when I really thought it about blew my mind. Gonna do some more research on this...makes sense though

1) obviously was considered and established certification.
2) no, this engine had reduction gearbox with prop shaft and thrust bearing.

Silverc4s was the first to guess. Here is a photo of the plane that it belongs to, taken at the Deutsches Museum for Airplanes a few weekends ago outside of Munich.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1383493021.jpg

In my years of flying I never had the opportunity to hear one. Must have been the sweetest sound in small aircraft.

Jrboulder 11-03-2013 07:12 AM

Hahaha mooney got porsche to pay for the certification of their streched fuselage then dumped them.

I knew about the Mooney, but not the airplane shown above, so for those interested....but to lazy to go find it......
