Vulture

Hey, I got one for you guys.

I'm driving through town and a slightly slick guy pulls up next to me and taps his horn. Asks if I want to sell my Carrera.

The car:
1989 Targa
53,000 miles
Black/black
One owner, all original, records, etc.
Now he can't tell all the above from his Impreza turbo, but...

Car looks good but not Concours level at all. Hey, I'm out getting a haircut in it! And I guess the slick guy thought I needed another one.

So here's the window-window dialog:

Slick guy: Hey, want to sell your car?
Me: No, I think I'll keep it.
SG: 1986?
Me: 1989.
SG: Really, want to sell it?
Me: No.
SG: I'll give you $18,000 for it!
Me: Well, that's certainly nice but it's worth $40k.
SG: Nah, not even if it was show quality. How many miles?
Me: 53,000.
SG: Really, you want to sell it? I'm in the business, it's worth $18k!
Me: Maybe three years ago. You should read up. It's worth 40 now.
SG: No way. I'm in the business. 18k!
Me: No thanks.
SG: 18k! I'm in the business!

Thankfully, light changes and I escape in my $18k Targa.

I had that happen but the guy offered me 40K. Sadly he was trying to impress a girl and had neither the will nor the means...

I think SG's logic was that we were at a red light and so were not moving, he'd heard that a Porsche expert named PullingMyPutz (or something like that) had determined that "the market was at a standstill," so therefore this was where you make a car deal.

RA

PS to christiandk: I'll guess I'll take your offer of $20k since it's above my last offer, but it would be best if you send me a really official looking bank check for, say, $30k. I'll arrange shipping to Denmark and refund any excess as cash in the glovebox. Work for you?

Oh, yeah. But be careful for what you offer...offers are binding if accepted and you dont sound Nigerian or flipper- scamming to me

On the way!

Hey Christian,

Car is on the way to you! If you walk out about 400 meters on the Midtermolen pier tomorrow night about 2 AM I believe you will see Wilson Lubeck docking with your new Targa aboard! Enjoy.

RA

n.b. Length of Midtermolen pier: 380 meters

Christian, thanks for posting that pic. Good on you for ownership of any sailing boat in the northern hemisphere!
My job includes looking at boats in marinas, above and below water. How cold is the water temp over there, summer and winter?

Hi Matt,

Nice to see another member interested in sailing. One of my very good buddies here, Frans from NZ as well, is a very passionate sailor as well. He is pretty bust with his "Porsche approved rusted Carrera" right now, though.

Well the water here in the winter time might freeze over, but many still keep their boats in the water, incl. me. In the summertime the temp rarely goes above 21-22c.

How is it around NZ. I have heard from Frans that he stll sails now even though it is winter!?

All the best from Copenhagen,

Christian

Cheers Christian, been following Frans's thread. All good!
Anyways, I've spent most if the last month underwater, and it's been cold irrespective of global warming lol.
