Too good to pass on?
I know of an '84 Carrera, guards red, 118k miles, 2 owner, what looks to be unmolested, over all nice P-car. Says he needs the quick sale, willing to take it down to PPI. Started at $20k, now at $15k, might do a little less.
My dream is the 930 and I have been saving for one for a while now and still want that, but am thinking maybe this one in the interim...? If the inspection is all a-ok, is this too good to pass on? Would I kick myself down the road if I don't get this? Never owned a 911 before, my wife says this is a good chance to test it out before dropping $45k on a turbo. I know some of you guys are a wealth of knowledge and experience... Hold out or start small? Thanks! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1385338440.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1385338455.jpg |
I'd buy it if the PPI is OK -- after all "its her idea" ---- play your cards right and you might end up with one of each
|
I'd say its a good deal and to buy it if it passes inspection. I just bought an '86 and they are great cars.
|
if it checks out that'd be a smokin' deal.
|
One of each.... I like that!
|
Anything specific that I need to have checked or ask about in the PPI?
|
Buy it now, as in today!

I would take the wife's advise. You can always resell the Carrera when the right 930 comes along.

911's are great cars and so are 930's, but very different.
This car would be a good stepping stone to a 930 but you might be disappointed when you get to the 930. The 84 Carrera will feel refined compared to the brute that is the 930. Also if you are standing on your toes to buy either cars you are making a mistake, you need to have some $ in reserves for the 911 and a lot more for the 930. You will find the 911 faster in the city and easer to drive most of the time. the 930 needs to be on boost to really enjoy its specialty. Buy the Carrera. It will not go down in value. |
Looking at the CL ad, the owner seems to have this sorted out quite well. And, at that price, it is a very good deal. Definitely have a PPI, seems too good to be true!
Check for oil leaks running and not running, oil hose condition, fuel line condition, some of the DIY fixes if needed. I have an '85 with an annoying oil leak when running. I do all my own work, but this one puzzles me. |
Another way to look at it if you like to drive your cars:
You'll get tickets in the 3.2 Carrera You'll get arrested in the Turbo :D |
Figure out what you really want first before you start spending dollars. You are looking at two very different cars. Once you get the boost fever, you will never look back. Try em both first. There will always be another car if you miss the first one.

That is a good deal on a 84 Carrera. There was a 88 Carrera cab posted in my local CL today and it was gone a few hours later. $10k with 125k on the car, some things were a little strange like H4 sugar scoops and early Carrera seats, but paint was nice. |
If it checks out, buy the car! You should learn to drive a 911 in a NA car anyway. That turbo has 3X the likelihood of sending you into a concrete barrier or off a cliff! - Matt
