Another price check... opinions needed
Looking at a 1988 911 Carerra Targa 114k miles. G50 trans, original motor and trans never opened for rebuild. Body in almost pristine condition as well as interior. All original besides a steering wheel and shift knob. Has a whaletail. Black on black.
Price? He is asking 27k. Looking for your opinions guys. |

$27k is strong money for a black Targa over 100k without top end work to sort the valve guides, but not out of the ballpark depending on condition & history.
If compression & leakdown numbers are good, the engine is dry, and he has service records showing sound, thorough maintenance and ownership history, $25-27k is about retail. It is hard to judge with no pictures and minimal information.

I'd have to call that awfully high. Most certainly go with a compression and leakdown test and try to do the decel test with someone watching you. It can be very hard to diagnose high oil consumption on account of bad guides. I bought my car, a coupe with less miles, for nearly 8k less than that. I couldn't get a PPI on account of its location, and have since spent 4k on a top end. Oil consumption was very high, symptoms were nearly nowhere to be found. Compression was stellar. I did not get to do a leakdown. I'm just saying - a whole lot of 3.2 owners have done top ends in the 100k range. In this market, maybe you wouldn't be underwater if you had to do one within your first year of ownership, but still. That's strong money.

Heres an idea : For all the help you are getting how about kicking back some of your profit to this BBS ? Personally I wouldn't help you because you don't contribute anything of value here, you just leech knowledge from people who are passionate about the marque. As for flipping the car... what I said was... will it be for sale someday at some point, probably. Don't you guys sell cars eventually too? As for me leeching off your forum??? I'm pretty sure that is the point of an enthusiast forum like this, for people to research and gain knowledge from others who already have experience in these cars. Is this wrong? I wouldn't think so. I hope that you sir, are not an accurate representation of the Porsche community. I am not sure what you would expect me to "give back" to the community as I do not even own a 911 yet, I am here seeking knowledge. Thanks for the kind words sir!

"I am honestly looking at it for myself. Does that mean it won't be for sale in the future, of course not."
I'm out of line huh ?, sure whatever you need to tell yourself. If you wanted to be an active part of the community then use the search function in the tech thread and read about the cars you are looking at. Learn something, Its simple enough start with 83 SC or 84-89 Carrera and work from there. THATS how i did it and now I'm on my fourth. I didn't come straight to marketplace and ask other people to tell me about the cars I was interested in. I could read ten current threads and have a solid idea about value that I formulated myself. Five will get you ten you didn't even look up backdated heat, after I told you about it, or the increased HP of the Euro motor, or the fact that a Euro car should have importation paperwork etc etc. And honestly I don't care if like 'Jeff' from GR your car lot helps the economy and you employ x number of under payed people. If you really are into the brand then thats great, but If that's the case why not make a post about something other than value or indignation ... Taking the moral high ground trying to stack up the polite 'Porsche community' against the impolite people like me, sure go for it. Maybe that works on the used car lot but frankly I couldn't care less if you think I'm quote "out of line" Last edited by sm70911; 01-25-2014 at 08:40 AM.. |

Guys, let it go. This is not contributing anything. Take it PM. If it wasnt for SM's way with words this would be a total waste of time for other members to read.

LOL should read not needed now ... In the last two weeks whilst you have been 'reading these endless threads' you hadn't even figured out RoW vs US cars, or thought hmm why is that rather large hose type thing not on this SC motor ... I hope someone was/is there to help you with studying for tests, because at this juncture its nil points for observation. In fact with ocular skills like yours are you sure you should be driving at all ...? |

Aw shucks no it's you that's cool ... and smart too. Smart enough to consider selling on a 911 with a Motor shiester re build. Gotta say though I'm not quite sure how that one sits with all the peeps you're hanging with up there on the Moral high ground ... but hey a proverbial Cucumber like yourself can make a contribution to this BBS and maybe help me to be 'cool' too ... sound good ?
