'65-'66 901/01 Engine Value

I recently bought a '68 VW bus that has a 901/01 type 2.0 engine in it, serial # 903227. It includes the solexes and aircleaner box. I am trying to determine it's value. You don't see many for sale, so its a bit tough to figure any kind of market value. One sold here with an asking price of $14k within the last couple of months that was a few hundred numbers later than mine. There are others priced higher and lower but varying condition/earlier serial #/no air cleaner, etc. The old adage that things are only worth what someone is willing to pay for it, probably really applies to this.
There is no documented history but I was told that it got parked in 1988 and did not get driven again. It was started periodically, but has not been run for a number of years. Was told that it has approx 10k on a valve job; all verbal so not of much value. It turns over by hand. The drain plugs on the oil tank and sump had a good gob of goo, but no metal pieces that I could feel. The sump screen didn't have anything weird in it.
- Any thoughts on whether it is worth trying to get it running? Is there potential to harm the engine, on an engine that a buyer would likely overhaul anyway?
- I'd prefer to sell it along with the bus. But should I just pull the engine? The bus is very rusty in the front along the windshield and headlights (rust through big time) and a few places in the roof. Its set up inside as kind of a camper - I know nothing about VW buses. I'm not placing much value on the bus, but it seems pretty solid underneath, it is pretty ugly though.
Here are some pics. Appreciate serious input. Not looking to separate the solexes or air cleaner. Thanks

I would not try to get it running, likely it needs a re build anyway. Where the real value is, is in re uniting it with the car it came from if that's possible. I would post on Early S and the 232 registry, someone might have the body. or have access to the early Kardex's so the original body or someone with a close chassis number that needs an engine gets to know about it
As for value, there's a less complete 901 motor on the F/S section, no solexes / air cleaner that hasn't moved at 8k.

Agree whith sm70911 8k to 11k because the solex and air cleaner are Worth 4000.00 alone and engine alu block 6500.00 good luck whith your sales

Contact Dave Pateman. He's the keeper of the early serial numbers. He can help you find the original chassis. That engine is worth 5 figures to whomever owns that chassis if it still exists.

Join Samba. Ask your question there. They are a mix of VW and Porsche guys. They can value your chassis as a roller and your engine.

What gearbox is in there?

It has a bus trans in it. Thanks for the replies and PM's.
