PPI and sale process

Is it reasonable to ask a buyer to agree to a price before a PPI is done? If PPI came up clean, car would be sold at that agreed price. If issues arose, price would be renegotiated.

Is it reasonable to ask for a deposit before turning car over for PPI?

Yep, general accepted process is agree to a price pending PPI. The check the buy writes will be agreed price - items identified in PPI. Good faith adjustments can be applied for 'non-issue' findings if parties are so inclined. I've been on the giving and receiving side of those items.

I also tend to throw in, up front, that either party can bail if the PPI uncovers repairs that exceed 30% of the agreed upon price. Had to exercise that one once, when the pristine looking car I was looking to buy wound up needing a ton of work.

Thanks. had a buyer balk when I said no PPI without agreement on price...didn't even get to deposit part. Probably for the best. I hate Craigslist!

Speaking of PPI,s..Im embarking on my first Porsche purchase. I found a local shop to do a PPi for $199 Don't think that includes a leakdown or Compression test. Are either of these tests better then the other. and should 1 of them be done. Can a Porsche tech drive the car and determine by oil pressure etc if all cylinders are good?

I would have let the PPI take place first if that's what they wanted. Ballpark price has already been set by your asking price. Before or after price agreement what difference does it make? PPI is on their dime. You already know your car and it's issues so you know what the PPI will reveal (probably). Plus you now have a current independent free PPI on your car to share with future buyers if this sale does not go through. Also if something is discovered you did not know about you can get it addressed if this buyer decides to pass.

As far as pricing you already know what your bottom dollar is on the car. A PPI probably is not going to move that # much unless you are really not aware of the true condition of your car. YMMV

Regards,

I wouldn't buy an air cooled 911 without a leakdown test. This is from personal experience. The pristine car I mentioned was meticulously maintained by a guy who gave his mechanic pretty much a blank check. A leakdown test revealed this gorgeous sub 45k mile gem needed a top end rebuild. Some claim there are those out there who can tell without the test. You need to decide if you're willing to take that wager.

My 964 was PPI'd with no leakdown. Test was done by a mechanic who is the tech writer for the local club. Knows his stuff !
After a year and a half, no problems croppet up.

For me the bigger question is what is the agreed procedure if the inspection or leakdown shows something out of the ordinary. Buyer can be out 300+ bucks and if the seller says "its a used car, deal with it" then what? I had this happen with a 964 and i walked from it after the best shop on the region said they would account for at least 6 to 7 k in needs, without ambiguity. Some leakdown numbers in the high 30s if i ecall. Naturally the buyer didnt want to sell his otherwise quite nice 964 for a bit over $12k. Wished id talked it thru before.

Sounds like a hell of a deal. You spent $300 to avoid spending a hidden $7k.

Yes, it's a used car. But if it needs a rebuild, then it's a roller with a matching-numbers core.

Yes, but many on here like PPI, yes they are good at times. But for me I must see the car myself. People had 3 PPI done on my cars and all three were done by people not knowing Porsches well...that's the key find a true Porsche person. The last person worked for Lemon Squad and liked cars but never knew a thing about mine...I guess it confirms the car is real and he looked at the title to confirm VIN, but at $300-500 bucks...I do not know for sure

This is a good point. If the person doing the PPI is not very familiar with the car, then the PPI can be misleading. Not just any PPI will do - it has to be a PPI at a place that knows these cars every which way.
