Hard to sell 76 911S

This car has been for sale for ages. Now the owner has obviously rebuilt the engine, which had issues according to prior for sale posts.

Frankly, I dont think that he will ever sell it......that ad and price combined.

I would love to know what a normal 76 911 is, since this is the "real S".

I wanted to make a thread about that car but almost felt bad for the seller as I keep seeing it pop up every few months.

His wife probably wants him to sell it so this is his way of telling her he's trying without having to actually sell it.

Nothing to feel bad about. The car is probably ok. He just needs to adjust the ad, the price and his mind about what his car is.

So, what do you think is wrong with the car? Has anyone here talked to the seller or seen the car in person?

It appears that it had engine issues last fall and something was done to address it. His price has ranged from $19K up to $26K during the last year and a half...

I believe I've seen that car at our local cars n coffee. I think it's a decent driver. I just think it is priced too high. That's a mid to high teens car.

Gotcha. Thanks Matt. I like the car, but it seems about $5K too high to me at it's current pricing.

With the non-original bits, thermal reactors and high miles its a tough sell.

Low Milage-Only 230,XXX miles! That's only 6k a year!!!
Sort of pushes the envelope on the term "low miles," doncha think?

I like the car apart from the white-faced gauges, but he is competing at a tough price point.

Its a good car. I think the owner needs to fix a few cheap items back to stock and it would look much better. Items to address for better presentation:

White guages,
Shift knob,
Chrome fan surround,
Rear speakers.

The value in this car is if its completely stock IMHO.

A couple of months ago we had a conversation about how much mileage matters in values. Lots of debate whether mechanical upgrades and rebuilds nullify the impact of high mileage…to a point.

I think this car is a case in point where mileage over 150K starts to significantly depress value, and 200k puts a low ceiling on the price buyers will pay. It is not just a matter of the condition of the car -- it is the fact that there are better, lower mileage options out there at comparable prices.

Recognizing that 30-40 year old cars tend to have unverifiable mileage, having "known" mileage is a buyer expectation for impact bumper cars. And if it is excessive or "unknown" it is a significant negative -- and cars like that are not going to approach the top values.

Good point COLB - I have always been very picky with documentation and milage on my cars.

Though, I have not even bothered to ask the current owner of the 71S I am looking at if the milage shown on the odometer is correct - Given the age and the weakness of the "clockwork" I just assume that it is not representative of how far the little car has traveled.

Hard to sell....

Funny thing with this car- it was posted for YEARS on many Colorado Craigslist sites at $16-18k with no takers until presumably it found some theoretical salvation with the Pelican market and the hopes that the recent bumps in values would take it along. Suddenly about $7k was added to the ask price!! Isn't delusion wonderful.

Impossible for me to believe but I actually agree with something Whiterabbit says. Put back closer to original. Easy to remove the badge form the glovebox, dump the ugly shift knob, loose the ugly rear speakers and re do the white face gauges. Then do the narrow body car justice and take some better pictures with better copy and the car would have sold.

When the current bubble on old 911 prices pops, that's going back to being a nice $6k car.

Only reason anything doesn't sell is price. Period.

If you're buying older 911s at anywhere near current market value right now, you are. Did you also buy a big house in Las Vegas in 2008?
