So, this is surface rust only, and has been fully-treated and repainted? That is something I could live with. If it's worse than that, I would not even consider the car. On a fully-galvanized car, any rust makes me scratch my head a little.

If the price is really good, AND the repair is complete, then I'd say "go for it". BTW, make sure you get a good car seat that fits. I had to wait until both of my girls were old enough to ride without booster seats before I could get my Porsche. You're a lucky man with an understanding wife. :)

I have been over this car with a fine tooth comb, even removed the sound deadener to look for evidence. Asking the mechanic to pay close attention on the PPI as well. This car has been loved & driven. This is the 8th car I have driven & I can not believe it. What a driving experience. Given that I would want to put both a wife & a 3yr old in it, the fact that it has not been moded in a HUGE plus.

Sounds good. Once a car reaches a quarter century old, it's only reasonable to expect even the cleanest cars to have some measure of a story. I hope it all works out for you.

I'm smiling right now. Bash is our anti-PML. Good luck. Get that '86 and love it.

Can you elaborate? I've never read anyone saying this before.

It's been mentioned plenty of times by various people over the years. The G50 trans is nice shifting tranny (I love it in my 993) but a well sorted 915 transmission shifts just fine. The 1986 and earlier cars are a little lighter, 915s are cheaper to rebuild (if the need arises), and some servicing (I believe) is easier than on the G50 - the starter, for example.

I also like the simplicity of a cable operated transmission.

Pml must have me blocked.

I don't want to give myself the kiss of death but we have a deal in place
I will discuss in more detail later as the story is a good lesson for all.
More news to follow in about a week or two
Stoked!

Don't mean to rain on the parade , but the 118K seems low for reupholstering in my book. Does the mileage check out 100% ?

You might wanna post some pictures of the affected rusty areas the "experts" here can comment on.

Pax
All good things in all good time with regards to photos
Suffice to say that if you not only follow the thread but also understand that my education has been greatly effected by the 8 cars that I have already passed or missed out on. Also understand that I have used not only the best mechanic in the Carolina's for the ppi as well as the resources here on pelican
Mate, be patient but I am STOKED
Fingers crossed
Did I mention there is a c2 cam upgrade involved!

pmax 05-29-2014 05:28 PM

A racing cam ?

maybe the PO was a fat dude?

Good Luck with the purchase, Bash!

Bash 06-03-2014 09:56 AM

No the po is a great guy as was the owner before him. I have spoken at length with both. The ppo was a stickler for creature comforts so he had both seats as well as the steering wheel redone when they started to look a little tired.

Not really. If one of the previous owners did nothing to condition the leather, it may have cracked to all hell over the course of two plus decades.

My car has 74,000 miles but the first owner clearly did very little to maintain the leather and there is some light cracking on the bolsters.

There are no absolutes of course.

The condition of the seats is just something to cross check against the other factors related to mileage , wear and tear.
