1986 Sunroof Coupe For Sale

So I have been searching for a 3.2 for about 9-10 months now. After lurking around the forums, I would always see this Porsche Proverb:

"If you are patient the right Porsche will come up at the right price point," or a variation of this.

I would curse the poster every time I read that and thought what a bunch of BS, especially with the current air cooled frenzy. I was either too slow on the draw, even though I responded within a 1/2 hour of posting. Or it was too good to be true and some shyster is asking me to send them a $300 deposit via Western U. (which I didn't). The worst are these lazy ass car dealers who lack any follow up. I would have to repeatedly email/call them to ask for service records/carfax/pics/etc. Or agreed on a price, but then all of a sudden a "German buyer wants to buy this so you need to up your offer" I won't mention any names, coughLUXcoughSPORTcough, but got tired of these used car salesman tricks. Had near zero trust with all of the ones I dealt with...from the East Coast to Nebraska to the PNW. But one day I logged on here and saw this:

1986 Sunroof Coupe For Sale

emailed 2x and got a reply. Local car that I could touch, drive, and not have to pay $1k+ to transport. The seller was a meticulous mofo with a super slick garage, very well designed home, and a cool as hell wife. I like previous owners to exude a dash of OCD. Service records from all previous owners that were nicely organized plus a bunch of other goodies like a car cover, bra, original tool kit and air pump, several P-books, and more. The car was priced very fair and being sold by a seller more concerned about the it going to an enthusiast's hands vs. a flipper/dealer. Thinking this was all too good to be true, I scheduled a PPI with a reputable Bay Area mechanic (Charles Rossignol) and braced myself when getting the results. Charles gave it a clean bill of health, sure a little hiccup here and a boo boo there, but the compression had a tight spread (179-185), the car ran clean, and the valves sounding solid.

It was a pleasure dealing with Bob and I'm happy to buy this baby for a tad under asking. Just upped my collector car game today by adding this Porsche next to my Z-Car. Thanks for the great transaction Bob!

-BTW, very possible a whale tail will be for sale soon! We will see if it grows on me.

Nice. Of course you should post some pics. My '84 doesn't have a tail, and I like the clean look, but the tail is such an iconic 80's look that I feel like they will be sought after in a few years. I wouldn't mind having one of each lid ( and a duck), and switching as my mood changes...

Nice looking car. Congrat's. I clicked over to the extra pic's provided by the PO. I have never seen an interior that color. It seems like something between gray and light brown. Also, the seats are two tone. Is that factory?

Great Q. I was told they are factory seats by seller and when I took it for my PPI, I asked the same thing. He said it was a European thing because some people did not like to sit directly on leather in the summer time. He said it wasn't common but has repaired a few cars with that interior. I actually prefer the full leather but am happy with the tan leather with cloth inserts.

Well bought - looks like a clean, solid car.

I love whale tails as I am a child of the 80s. I actually think the impact bumper cars look incomplete without them.

Iconic 80s stuff I say.

1986 marked the last year of the totally mechanical Porsches. Something was lost a little at a time from that point on.
Congrats, enjoy.

Just took it for a nice little drive. Kept it in 4th gear on the highway going about 65-70MPH @ 3500 RPM. Slowly getting used to the 915 box and using two fingers guide the shifter then letting go. Trying to make each shift a 2 step process. Everything sounded and felt good except when I drove about 15 feet and heard squeaking...then realized I didn't fully release the e-brake. Power mirrors are a little wacky but no biggie. Already added to the binder of service records (PPI). I think I got a very fair price, not a steal but not overpriced. Just saw some other 86 3.2's sell in high $20's, but with 30k+ more miles. Overall, I feel good about this purchase. Thanks for the positive vibes all.

Would love to hear value opinions!
