901 Transmission Value
My 73.5 911T, oddly, came with a 901 transmission when I purchased it. Obviously, this isn't the one it was originally equipped with so I have slowly gathered the bits to install a correct 915. I have about 90% of all the parts.
I will soon have a 901 transmission that still shifts well but nothing to put it in and no plans to do anything with it. I'm not near the car, so I don't have the serial or case numbers. I'm venturing a guess that it is one from a later year, say '70-'71. What do you guys think these are worth nowadays? |

Probably worth between $1000 and 2500 dollars. Really depends on the type of transmission it is and the gearing that it has, and also whether it has a limited slip in it. For reference the last type 901 transmissions were used in 1969 and then in 70 and 71 they became a 911 transmission. You've got to get the type and the serial number off the bottom to be able to determine what's inside the thing.otherwise, we can only make a vague guess as to the value of it

Depends. I would not pay anything more than $500. for a core with un-known history or condition. I have personally had two rebuilt, that still were drivable and shifting fine, but needed some bearings and syncros, and rebuild cost over $3500. ten years ago. Unless this has a limited slip, special upgrades or gears, etc I would say $1000. I have seen four in the last few months at $1000. that the lister stated were in good condition. I know rebuilders such as California Motorsports gave me $500. core credit for a 915, which was fine. I am looking for a 1969 901 core with push type clutch myself.

Thanks, guys. My mistake. Then it can't be a 70-71 because I recall it saying 901 on the case. It is an aluminum case.

I believe the 901/07 transmission is from a 1969 911E or 911S

The transmission you have is earlier than a 69. 69's like my 911T had magnesium cases. According to the 69,70 and 71 tech spec book, this transmissions stock gearing
is the same as my 69 911T, which has a 901-13 Box. There is a post from another member who is offering a mag case 901 13 box that has been re built. I do not know if he has written documentation, or a warranty on the re build. He is asking $2500. for his. I offered $1000. and he considered it not a reasonable offer. I am looking for a 901 transmission with a push type clutch, which was used on the 69 and earlier. We will be completely dissasembling it to install custom gearing, billet plate and bearing retainers and LSD for our auto cross car. Let me know what you need to get out of this box. How was it operating when you had it in the car?

Were you able to find a matching numbers 915 for your 73.5? We also have a 73.5T which has a 72E 915 transmission. We have the matching numbers engine, but we are still looking for the proper transmission.

I know who built that gearbox for sale and would trust the condition of the box. $1000 is an insult. I could sell just the 3rd and 4th gears out of that box for $500 each. Try to find a good 901 r/p set for under $500 these days. Probably more like $7-800. $2500 is a pretty good price for the box for sale. The one in this thread? $1500 or more. Regards, Matt

Didn't mean to insult Matt. You may have more information than I do, knowing the builder and all, and are able to make a more educated valuation. I do not know the rebuilder from Adam, and certainly do not know what gears are inside the box. A rebuilt transmission should have proper documentation listing all parts that were replaced, otherwise the price is affected. BTW. we trade the M & S gears for around $250 per set, and sold off all of our 901 ring and pinions for $250. per set. I guess our prices out here on the west coast are somewhat different.

Not insulting me, though 30 seconds on Google would tell you Brad Mayeur owns 914 Limited and is very respected in teener circles.
