Caution.. Salvage Title Car

I spoke to this seller a few months back on this car. The price is ridiculous. He does not list the VIN number in his eBay listing because this is a salvage title car. After 4 or 5 days of emailing back and forth about the car he finally sent me the VIN number.

It takes real balls to ask that kind of money and represent that car as perfect knowing its a salvage car.

Too bad, nice car. I could use the seats. The way he states it, if it's a salvage title , he is misrepresenting.

He is clearly misrepresenting the car.

I went and looked at the car last year in Ohio from the 2nd owner at a price of $30k. and after driving 9hrs I had to explain to the owner that it was a salvage car. It was a thief recovery from back in the day. but them 3 weeks later the car was on eBay. From a dealer in NJ for $67k. I as well asked the same question is it a clear title car and he said yes. Then I had to break the news to him that he bought a Salvage car. He then stopped talking. I reported it to eBay and they would take the car off for misrep. of goods. Now again last week he posted it again and I reported it. Because I hate to see someone get screwed. They pulled his ad again. well now he has it posted as Salvage/ Rebuildable in the title section.

If you look close in the picture of the engine bay on the drivers side is the Salvage Plaque issued by the DMV.

Salvage is still a salvage, but I don't think people would be nearly as apprehensive about buying a theft recovery versus a total loss. My buddy has a low mileage Ferrari 348 TS theft recovery and I told him I want right of first refusal when he goes to sell. Doesn't bother me one bit so long as it's priced accordingly for a salvage.

That said, he wants $64,000 and can't even take decent pictures. The aftermarket bits and wheels aren't doing the car any favors either.

This issue comes up a lot, so I googled salavage title on Wikipedia...

It was interesting. According to wikipedia, at least:

1) A car with a current salvage title is not worth a lot
2) A car with a prior salvage title, that has been rebuilt, takes a 30-50% hit...

BUT

there is also the category of CLEAN TITLE currently... but salvage in the past. I suspect that MOST slavage cars fall into this category...

From Wikipedia:

Title washing refers to transferring a vehicle's registration for the express purpose of removing a title brand.[12] The practice is legal, and practiced by the insurance companies themselves.[13] Title brands such as "salvage," "junk," and "rebuilt" are not standardized, and a vehicle which has such a designation may receive a clean title when registered in a different jurisdiction. Further, vehicles imported to or exported from the United States and Canada are issued a clean title, even if they have been involved in an accident. Other states have relatively lax inspection criteria to remove the salvage brand.[2]

A car with a prior salvage, CURRENT CLEAN TITLE, perhaps only takes a small hit. The insurance companies have no issue insuring these, as they go by the current title...

According to Carfax the vehicle was stolen and then later issued a "salvage" title. I dont have any further details.. My guess is it was either stolen and stripped, or stolen and wrecked. Either way its not worth anywhere near that asking price. Either way its being grossly misrepresented. Thats a disgrace. I am guessing that some unsuspecting buyer will eventually come along and pay a foolish price for it.

The same seller has a bunch of other 911's listed... I am strictly guessing but .... I would not be surprised if the others are dogs that he picked up, polished up with lipstick and is trying to dump.

I hate the way ppl arnt honest up front. He should state it clearly so as to not waste ppls time.

But in defense of some rebuilt titles. I bought a rebuild integra once, it depends I guess on the car and time and extent of the issue. These car fax reports need to be more detailed.

How much was a 964 worth back in the early 2000s? I imagine it would be really easy to right one off with very minimal damage back then before they started to increase in price especially for a high mileage example.

fenix... thats a good point. Two years ago it would have been easier to write off most of these cars after accidents or thefts. The market has changed a lot. This car was stolen in 1987and then had a branded "salvage" title the same year.

This seller is a bottom feeder in my opinion.

Respectfully, Nachtfalter, I am an RV dealer. A dealer just the same. I do not lie. I do not cheat. I take offence to your statements.

Really? You don't go into a used car purchase from a dealer assuming everything is a lie?...
Good luck with that.

For what it's worth, title problems or not, the way this car is priced it is in no danger of being bought.

Good luck with your life! You claim all dealers are liars - Balony ! You should go buy everything you can on the black market and see how the works for ya !!
Respectfully , you misspoke. I will explain :

Most crooks lie and cheat, for sure . But just a small number of dealers are crooks. So are a small number of contractors, retailers, and dentists for that matter. Where I live we have the Alberta Motor Vehicle Industry Council. We have paid millions to monitor and eradicate crooked dealers and have had great success. We work hard at it and so do other areas in our country. We don't need guys badmouthing the dealer industry.
You should buy your vehicle from an accredited dealer and your are insuring AGAINST CROOKS !

My appologies for ranting. Just trying to protect and enhance mine and many others livelihood .

Crooks are crooks
Good dealers are a safety net
