Matching numbers question

I posted a question a while back about a 1973 911T Targa with a Sportmatic trans and welcomed the feedback. Being a Porsche novice I now have a question about "matching numbers" Quite simply, what does the term mean and what are their significance concerning potential sale value? I am restoring the car for resale. The numbers I have located so far are VIN 9113110226, on the fan housing 901106101SR, and engine 9139037. I have found the number for the transmission yet. Any help given to a "rookie" is greatly appreciated

As you imply, it normally means that the car you have has the body, tranny and engine it had when it was delivered from Porsche at birth.

Porsche can (COA) confirm if the numbers are matching

Trans type and serial number is on a rib on the bottom of the gearbox. Often if it has been in and out of the car a lot it gets scraped off.

If your engine is 9139037 it 2.4 cis 1973.5 engine.

Getting a COA from PCNA takes 4 to 6 weeks, costs $115 or so.

Is the tran number on the bottom of the case?

thanks I'll look in to it

I was wondering if it was a 1973.5 As you can see I am a novice with a lot to learn but feeling pretty good about the progress of my restoration efforts now that I have the suspension pan and gas tank support welded in. I will check on the trans number when I get back to PA from sunny Florida in a month

Does a specific serial number motor go in a specific car? For example can any 1975 2.7 motor go in a 1975 2.7 car? thanks.

Yes, each car has a engine specific to that car, the COAs for my 914-6 & 944 Turbo "S" shows the correct numbers the cars left the factory with.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1423105424.jpg

So to be clear,

the numbers on your car for the VIN, engine and transaxle should "match" your certificate of authenticity (COA) from Porsche. In the Porsche world, the numbers from the various components do not "match" each other, they match numbers listed on your COA.
