$32k seems about right to me.

142k miles is considered high mileage by many buyers.
Low quality repaint
Aftermarket steering wheel
Filthy engine

It amazes me how buying a car and cleaning the engine can add value to a car to the point a living can be made from it.
But you response confirms the truth to that.

I agree with this. Probably maybe + $4K/$6K higher would have been OK too.

Guards Red repaint, Targa, high mileage. Though it's pretty nice that it's a 1989 - if it were a more pedestrian 1986 or any year SC I would have thought $32K was good, but it being an '89 should have given it a premium in my mind.

Engine doesn't look filthy by any means and it came with original wheel/tool kit and also had a clean bill of health from a reputable So Cal shop (if that means anything). Being a 89 I still think this was a very good deal in this current market.

This is what a $300 PPI buys you in So Cal ?

Wow.

You're focusing on the symptom, not the cause.
Anyone can spend $5 on engine degreaser and clean it.
However, the correct question is, "Where did the oil come from?"
With these cars, chasing that down and resealing the case may be a $10,000 affair.
That is what is reflected in the selling price of cars with filthy engines.
(And a proxy for general neglect. Always buy the seller)

You're looking at the wrong side of the filthy engine

I agree that is a dirty engine, the underside, and to me that looks good.
If you read the PPI, there is no note of a oil leak other than "very slight seepage from left right valve cover". And in that picture I can tell for sure that engine has no leakage issue from the case, which would be washing the old oil stain away where the case leaked. If it had been clean, I would not know from a picture if it leaked all.
This discussion brings up a question I have thought of a lot in the past, when selling, should you leave the engine alone to show that there is no fresh leakage or clean it to make it more appealing to the buyer?

That is why as a mechanic who has performed many PPI's I am suspect of freshly cleaned engines as I wonder what was washed away, and engine left as it has been run for a few thousand miles will reveal leakage. Leakage that will not happen in a few hours of running.

But I would say the average buyer prefers clean,

I now clean everything well knowing that most buyers are not mechanics and like clean, to the point it raises the value thousands of dollars or even makes it sellable to them when in fact is a way to hide problems.
