Engine Case Numbering
There is an interesting discussion on the 356 Registry site about this, lots of good info. As all the Porsches increase in value this will pop up more and more.

The numbers matching thing is a little out of hand - if there is money to be made people will learn how to make forgeries - undetectable to almost anyone. This is true in the car business, art, currency you name it. Based on my very limited knowledge of the market the 356 crowd seems much less hung up on matching numbers than the 911 crowd.
