$85,000 motor. Educate me...

I have seen some expensive motors before, but they usually are very rare or extensively built race motors.

Can you educate me on this one? Is it that rare/ special?

It's a 73 RS engine. Their story doesn't completely make sense and it's not 100% stock. but to someone with a real RS with no engine it would be worth a lot.

In my experience, anything made in "small batches" is more expensive, be it beer or kettle chips

Matching numbers RS' are worth what? $500K-$1M? Like Matt says, if you've got one with no engine, even though it's modded, it's worth a lot.

I’d like to see their documentation that it’s from a complete replacement engine. Replacement cases are generally instamped until used. And the number is in the last 200 engines made, not all the way at the end.

Why so secretive about the engine number last two digits? Seems really odd - if the factory says it was never assigned to a car, why does the full ID need to be hidden? Maybe I'm missing something.

Yep. That's one of many odd things about it. And look how filthy that is compared to the 911/83 picture. So they took a picture of the serial number dirty before the rebuild but the type number clean after? Makes no sense.

Thoughts...

1) If it were never assigned to a real RS, then what's the difference between this engine and another 2.7 7R case (replacement or otherwise)? If you built a 2.7 7R mag case with mech. injection and 2.7 cylinders, in my mind there is nothing really special about a RS engine, with the only exception being what does make it special is when its installed in a numbers-matching RS CAR.

2) Assuming it is a real 66313XX (911/83) engine - let's say engine #1350 as Matt assumed, placing it in the production order of number 1350 out of 1551 engines, then it would only be special to someone who 1) had the car, 2) knew the engine was a backup run in there car, or 3) wanted a cool backup to their vintage racer (possible).

3) I do not see the value, nor the thing about disguising the last two numbers. I would have just disguised everything after the 663XXXX.

There is nothing special about this engine. A 911/83 engine is a 7R mag case with 2.7 Nikasil and mech. injection.

Is there anything else unique about the 2.7mfi motor? For example on a carrera 3.0 the distributor rotation is opposite of that on a 3.0sc motor. Just curious

Well nothing too special. It came with the black nitrated rods same as the 2.4S and throttle bodies had larger idle bypass passages. Ignition advance curve slightly different. I don’t believe the blocks or MFI pumps were hand selected out of production for any special reasons (California MfI cars did receive the most accurate pumps to help pass emissions). The pistons were forged like the Carrera 3.0 and 2.4S. Nothing that can’t be built today. Good street manners, not peaky. Best suited for lightweight cars with lower gearing IMO.

I do not disbelieve in anything. I start from the premise that everything is true until proved false. Everything is possible.

The dizzy rotation is a generational thing. The C3 engine shares the same crank as the 2.4 and 2.7, with the primary difference in the engines being 92mm versus 90mm.

A 73 RS engine is basically a 2.7l S spec engine for most comparison purposes, and a lot of shared parts.

Cool thanks guys. Somehow I think the seller feels that it never belonging to a specific car would generally be better for someone that’s missing their motor. Sort of the next best thing from numbers matching would be a factory replacement from that same year and 663 series.
