If you tighten the adjuster nut with the kirk tool still attached then you won't have this problem. If the gap changes after you've tightened it, the tool will tell you.

The 964 was delivered from the factory with 5w-40 and I have yet to hear of any 964/993 related issues with 0w-40 (going on almost 10 years now that Porsche has been using it).
