Ummm, yes. it can be done... however it requires the spare tire well to be removed! There is not enough clearance to remove the tail housing while the trans is still in the car :(

If it starts then dies.... Make sure the AFM...

If it starts then dies....
Make sure the AFM sensor is plugged in as well as the TPS on the bottom of the throttle body. If the Air flow meter is unplugged the engine will usually start then die out...

The entire 5th gear is located in the rear aluminum tail-housing.
