I had the same issue. Replaced the thermostat as well as the switch with the BMW part and installed a cockpit switch to manually turn on the oil cooler fan in the front right oil cooler to come on...

I have the Euro plate holder attached via the USA bracket. Works fine. Plenty of holes in the Euro plate holder. Worked fine the three years I lived in Stuttgart. I didn't get the Euro bracket.

Mine ran hot and it was the engine mounted cooler. Assumed it was the external thermostat or FR wheel cooler but it was the engine mounted all along.
