Starter only really needs 3 things: Power, Ground and Signal.

Remove the signal wire, hook up the alternator and see if you are getting constant power to the signal wire with...

Ah, I see.

I couldn't wait that long so I just took mine apart and put it back together again. Bench testing on a counter is different than operating bolted to a hot block.

Ya gonna rebuild...

sticking starter

Same thing happened to me. You should rebuild your starter. Either the bendix is sticking or the yoke is sticking, or the solenoid is sticking. I remember it wasn't a big deal and a few others run...
