You should be able to tell the difference between slipping clutch (engine revs up with no forward thrust in relation to engine rpm and no tire spin), tire spin (it's pretty obvious when this happens)...

I think the rpm drop would be too much. With the gearing you were thinking about (1st 2.25, 2nd 1.50, 3rd 1.00, 4th .625) you would need to rev engine up to 3500 rpm before shifting from 3rd...
