I just replaced my alternator, VR, and belt yesterday. I was lucky enough to find an alternator at my FLAPS for $55 and VR for $20. Throw in a new belt and the total cost was under $90.

Had a similar problem many years ago. One of the wires that runs under the AAR toward the dizzy had a bare spot and would intermittantly (sp?) short out the fuse you speak of. Check there first.
