The oil in the tank is draining through the S hose That's why it's smoking on start up, it smokes more the longer it sits. The Rothsport valve will fix it, had the same thing in my 930.

His port might be for the drain from the air-oil...

His port might be for the drain from the air-oil separator, which would not extend up inside the tank. The only way to find out is drain the tank and see what happens inside the tank connection.

Unless you are a "has to be stock" type of owner I'd just use the check valve and not bother with a different tank.
