simple, lightweight NA 996 exhaust system?
I'd love to find a light, simplified, streetable, not ludicrously loud exhaust for my '00 NA 996 cab without having to go to custom fabrication, modify a racing header setup or some such approach. What I have in mind is eluding me so far on internet searches. I run a custom aftermarket set-up (EDIT: ha - to the comment below, it is the AfterHours exhaust) on my '00 coupe, but I would want something at least a little less aggressive for the cab.
I'm thinking something at least similar to the old air-cooled exhausts - a simple pipe handling each cylinder bank with a small muffler, or perhaps just a central main muffler body only (without the big mufflers up in each wheelwell). Seen anything good lately?

Here you go. A buddy of mine has these. Sound aggresive and very light.

Bumping this back up a having a hard time fishing exhaust recommendations using the Search function, and my browser seems to limit threads to a single page in this forum.
Has anyone been using AfterHours and has additional feedback? I like the lightweight aspect, but am not looking for too much noise at typical road speeds. DE/track and acceleration is fine... I am trying to figure out who has the most affordable, light, non drone mufflers to replace the stock mufflers which are worn out...??

Now you have me interested in the Afterhours exhaust… there isn’t much out there, a few threads on Renn list if you google it. I’m gonna call them a little later today and see if they are still in business. It looks very similar to the Supercup exhaust on my 911 SC which is nice and loud with a cat bypass pipe. Imagining this will be pretty similar but muted due to my 996 having cats.
It’s pretty hard to judge how loud an exhaust might be in a lot of videos. I have some videos driving my SC through a roughly half mile long tunnel. In the car it sounds insane with sound echoing but the GoPro makes it seem kinda mundane. |

Follow up… just called and talked to Brian who owns Afterhours. They are still making the 996 mufflers and I’m probably gonna end up ordering a set in a couple weeks. My car is currently at a mechanic getting the IMS, clutch and some other things done and will wait until it’s back. Currently have the $120 Amazon 996 muffler bypass (looks pretty much identical to $800 Fabspeed version) and I’m also gonna give that a try for a few days… guessing it’s gonna be too loud for regular driving but wanted to give it a shot.

The 996 is my primary daily driver and after a couple months the bypass pipes have been fine. I have the top down 99% of the time (it only goes up if I get caught in rain or to wash the car) so I’m exposed to the sound. I’m gonna be out in California for a while in a couple months so I might try and go by Afterhours and check them out in person. |
