How do I find an 84-89?

Hi Friends,

Long-time (since 2013ish) lurker, first-time poster (I never did figure out Where the #$! Ronnie’s 930 is, but I continue to be impressed by the voluminous posts of many of you fine folks)…After many years of wanting, I’m finally a buyer for an 84-89 3.2 coupe, my dream and buy-and-drive-for-the-rest-of-my-days car…

My question: where should I be looking?

I’m checking here, eBay, cargurus, cars and bids, BaT (although the community inflation there makes it unlikely), Autotrader, Rennlist, PCarMarket. Is there anything I’m missing? I’ve only been actively looking for six weeks now, but wanted to see if anyone that’s farther along the path has additional advice.. Or is just a matter of patience?

My ideal car would be one that’s mechanically sound, may even have a few tasteful performance mods, aesthetics are less important—I’m not a purist and would plan to carefully tweak and personalize all of the details over the years to come…

Thanks in advance!

Cheers!

Bought my 1981 SC Turbo 12 years ago off Craig's List local to me by posting a Wanted Poster with a picture in my add. The owner didn't even know he wanted to sell until his son saw my ad. I'm way out in West Texas where there aren't many Porsche people or cars.

This.

Plus, every "Porsche only" shop I've ever visited has or knows about cars that are for sale or MAY BE for sale. Find all of them within 50 or 100 miles and go visit. Don't bother calling....you're just another bottom feeder to them.

Bringing coffee and donuts can't hurt. If you have one nearby, visit all the time and get to know them. These guys always have cars for sale and usualy are very familiar with it as well.

Yes, thanks, NYNick! There are only a couple of shops here in WNC that focus on Porsche, but I’ve stopped by them…need to go down to Greenville, SC next.

Thanks, Speedster—been checking the PCA ads as well, forgot to list that one.

Holt Motorsports is bookmarked, and a Craigslist ad is a great idea, I forgot about doing that.

Much appreciated!

Patience!

All the above are good hunting spots and or search advice.
I don't think I have ever found the car I buy in under 18 to 24 months. Picky? Maybe?
But if you aren't, it gets expensive. So have patience. If it doesn't feel right, it probably isn't.
The search is as much fun as what comes afterwards so enjoy the process.
I find auctions to stressful and prefer dealing with person to person.
Happy hunting!
Just my 2 cents worth.
