Camshaft gear alignment is requiring 5 shims - is that OK?
After some trials and tribulations, I'm finally doing the top end assembly for my 911 engine rebuild.
For the camchain sprocket alignment, I'm finding that the left side requires 5 shims to get the alignment within spec. I'm reasonably confident in my measurements. I understand that 3-4 shims is typical. The right side took 4 shims. It's mostly the same engine going back together. Cams are new/different, and the 4 chain sprockets are new. It may be worth noting that the old camchain sprockets showed significant wear on the sides where the chains ride (more on one side), suggesting possible misalignment. Should I be surprised/concerned at needing 5 shims on the left side? |

Your math works for you, you have new cams and new gears, do what is necessary.
