Head
Trying to remove left side head. (Broken exhaust stud - long, sad story)
BMW’s tool to lock TDC conflicts with the airbox, which doesn’t come out. What am I missing?!? There must be a trick? |

I put in the longest M8 bolt I could get by the airbox but the crank isn’t exactly locked. “…shouldn’t move the slightest bit” as the Clymer manual says. With the M8 in place it will rotate about 4 teeth on the flywheel.
Thoughts? |

No, I think it is 11-2-650. It’s supposed to go thru a hole in the trans and thru a hole in the flywheel. But, like I said, the airbox is in the way.

Have someone sit on the bike in top gear and stand on the brake.I'm assumingthis is to get the allen screw that holds the cam sprocket on. Its a beast your going to want a hardened allen wrench. Don't forget to put a wire the through the timing chain and the sprocket

+1 on having a well-fitting Allen wrench you can put some torque onto. I rounded out one of those M8s disassembling and it was nerve-wracking to drill and EZ-Out the bolt.
If you DO happen to eff it up, I bought two bolts at the time and only needed one. I wouldn't worry too much about the flywheel moving a couple teeth. If it holds steady enough for you to break the bolt loose, stop there then get it back to TDC and continue loosening the cam bolt. |

The R1100S is put together a little differently than the rest of the oilhead family. I'm a little surprised the tool didn't fit, but there you go. I have used an allen key with success before.
