It seems like an awful lot of these GTs are crashing. Insurance must be HORRENDOUS on these things.

Up here there is a rumour that our provincial insurance company will not provide collision coverage and maybe some other coverage on them.....

Most of their drivers can't handle them.

I think mankind has "jumped the shark" with regard to autos that are this exotic and are driven on the street.

I'm not sure though, so I'd really like to test my theory by driving one myself.

Seriously, though, assuming this is a case of "speed kills", things are a bit out of hand.

I stopped at the Greenwich CT. Porsche dealer today to look at the Cayman and there was a totaled Carrera GT out back under a tarp. This has got to be one of the worst vehicles produced to accident ratios ever. I think that they are going to have to screen buyers the way that Ferrari does or this could turn in to a huge black eye for Porsche.

That sound you hear is 60 Minutes circling for an expose'.

Cars like this I equate to my sport bike. It may not be your ability that keeps you alive, it may be your brain. I would have gotten myself into a lot more trouble on the bike if I still had the brain I had when I was in my early twenties! It is all about knowing your limits and where to test them and who to have teach you how to improve them. Most of that takes place on a race track with a competent instructor, but even there, your brain is your best asset if you use it properly.

Cheers

I read the other day where Ralph Nadar is still crusading against the automotive industry on a few issues. Glad to hear he's looking out for our safety still after all of these years. Maybe he should focus on sports cars over 500HP?

^^^As long as he leaves me & my Corvairs (and Porsches) alone, I'm happy. He has, however, been a good sport and been the "guest of (dis)honor" at a number of Corvair conventions since.

A lot of 500 hp cars have this problem. The Viper is another one that people slam into poles all the time.

Does the GT have all the electronic stabilizing help other new Porsches have? I autocrossed a 2005 977 last year and tried to hang the tail out. That car did anything to ensure that it was going down the track nose first, where you are pointing it. It was puzzling. It would apply brakes and all kinds of things happened! I would think that unless you turn the electronics off, you have to try hard to go off the road ...

What about the victims of the accident? Does anyone ask?

Are they ok? I hope so.

here's the details -- less pictures at the moment -- it had been raining a bit and i was installing a roof rack on my Toyota Matrix.

in the distance, i heard an unusual sounding accelaration. it sounded a bit like a sports bike or a high performance car really getting moving. then i heard the sound of tires skidding on wet pavement, then lots of crashing sounds. i knew the accident was very close to my house, perhaps just a few blocks away. a few minutes later, i heard the sounds of sirens. when my roof rack was installed, i went looking for the accident.

sure enough, just outside the guard gate to my subdivision, there were multiple police cars & fire trucks blocking the road, as well as an ambulance with strobes working. i looked up the hill and i see a black car just demolished. i survey the scene and see car parts strewn for 100 yards. i see a cinder block wall with a huge section missing. i assumed there was another car that had gone through the cinder block wall.

i drive around the road block to get to the backside of the accident. i get up close to the carnage and see what resembles the rear quarter section of a Carrera GT. when i get closer, i see what is left of the huge rotors and yellow calipers. i see the unmistakable front light of a P-car sitting amidst the other parts all over the street.

i make it back home and i sent my girlfriends son and two friends to the scene. they bring back 25 camera phone photos of the mess. we reviewed the photos and it was clear that it was a GT. what a huge loss !

problem is..........the kids took off before i had a chance to get the photos off his camera phone (damn BRATS !!).

tomorrow i will make an effort to track them down and get the pic's for everyone. sorry i couldn't get them tonight.....

Ed,
Thank god for Ralph Nader. Why make the cut at 500 HP. Your 911 is extremely dangerous due to it's rear weight bias and should not be driven at any speed. It also has a gas tank in the front that is vulnerable in a front end collision. The cooling system is filled with over two gallons of carcenogenic liquid (proven in the state of California) which is also flammable and can cause severe burns if spilled on you. The cooling fan will easily sever a finger or tear your scalp off your head if your hair gets caught in it. In 2016 it will be discovered that leather has a .0000000024 greater chance of contributing to herpes in adults over 27 than burlap. I absolutely need more regulation in my life. Please someone set some kind of limit on the HP of my automobile and what I do with it.

He has - well, to an extent - IIRC Nader once said racing is useless folly. It in fact does not improve the breed.

As to Carrera GT - that's really too bad. Personally, I can't stand the car. However, it's shameful to see all that engineering, not to mention $$ go to waste. I just hope the occupants are okay - physically and emotionally.
