NE Oregon Tour - July 11, 12 & 13

A number of us Canadians enjoyed the 2007 CanAm route so much last year, we are going to do it again this year. I know....call us crazy!!

Like last year, we will headquarter in The Dalles, Oregon along the Columbia River.

Us Canucks will head down to Seattle on Friday. Hoping to meet up with some of you at XXX in Issaquah. We should be there by 10:00 AM. Then drive behind Mt Ranier and St. Helen's. Target is to get to The Dallas by supper.

We will then retrace the route through NE Oregon. These roads are unbelievable through the Oregon high desert grasslands. If you like to drive on twisties with lots of elevation change and limited traffic, this is the tour for you.

Sunday will be a few twisties around Yakima, Washington as we head home.

Please note that this is not intended as a sightseeing tour, but the scenery is breath taking. If you enjoy driving and having fun, you will need to join us!!

Any preference on hotel?? I see Super 8 has good rates..............

I am certainly hoping to be able to do this tour but won't know until just a few days beforehand if I can due to work.

The Super 8 seems like a good choice so it has my vote.

Charlie:
You da man!
Is there a map by any chance for the roads we took through NE Oregon?
I remember it was fantasmaglorious but can't remember the actual route.

From what I remember....

east from The Dalles on I84
southeast on 206 to Condon
east on 206 to Ruggs
south on 207 to Service Creek
north on 19 to Fossil
west on 218 to Shaniko
north on 97 to Biggs
and west on I84 to The Dalles

according to Google......295 miles and 6 beautiful hours of driving.

you should integrate this road into the drive to/from;

Peter, I agree. I was planning to travel it at least once. Thinking on the way home.

Do you know if the road behind St Helen's is still washed out??

Cheers.

it was closed when i checked the route three weeks ago, it will most likely be open by the time this event comes around. you can find out the road status here;

if you're really motivated, you can do this road as well. it's the very road that was used by shelby for their world speed record run;
http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=sr-221,+wa&sll=46.024145,-119.610214&sspn=0.318962,0.698318&ie=UTF8&ll=46.06 9896,-119.601974&spn=0.318698,0.698318&z=11

watch out for the MAN on that road. and the fishermen and the kids floating down the river in innertubes.
that was my bail out road coming back after all my ignition problems, during last years can-am. better than taking the high road between yakima and ellensburg.

no less than 3 patrol cars stopped by to check on me, when i was on the side of the road waiting for the coil and other parts to cool down so i could travel another 10 miles. no potable water in that canyon. but good for cooling off a hot teener.

It looks like we are unable to travel south of Randle. The bridge just south is out July to Sept 2008. Darn.........

http://www.fs.fed.us/gpnf/04maps/documents/gpnf-forest-vicinity-map-2008_11x17.pdf

So - looks like we can travel south into Rainer on 410, south on 123 and east on 12 into Yakima. Maybe do Peter's canyon route just north of Yakima and then south to The Dalles.

I'm open to suggestions.

I just spoke to the folks at Super 8 - The Dalles about their group rate. It would be better for everyone to book individually on-line with the AAA rate.

So - you are all on your own for booking a room.

Cheers.

Google says 30 miles in 53 minutes. This one sounds like it will be fun.

Meet location for Vancouver area folks will be the ESSO station in Blaine at the corner of Boblett and Yew. This is just south of the truck crossing on Pacific Hwy.

http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=boblett+st+%26+Yew+ave,+ blaine,+wa&sll=48.99075,-122.737284&sspn=0.02067,0.037422&ie=UTF8&z=16&iwlo c=addr

Let's target being there at 6:30 AM and we will leave at 7:00 AM. We will stop in Burlington for coffee and pick up others crossing at Sumas Border Crossing.

http://www.grandprixespresso.com/directions.php

Goal is to be in Seattle for 10:00 AM to meet up with the Seattle folks. Meet location to be confirmed.

Grand Prix Espresso has closed up shop... We found that out on our way up for CanAm 2008 mk 1.

Try Bellingham, as basically nothing in Burlington opens early... I couldn't even find an espresso stand.

I know some people have already booked rooms, but have you given any thought to shifting the schedule one day and coming down on Saturday instead of Friday? That way you might be able to catch the normal XXX gathering (July 12th, 8:30-whenever) on your way down to Oregon.

Good suggestion. However, too many people are committed to a Friday thru Sunday trip. Need to stay with that now.

Cheers.

Ah that explains it... after finding GP espresso closed I wandered into around the north side of town. Looking at Google maps, all the results for coffee are on the south side of hwy 20.
