Radiator-style Carrera oil coolers
Does anyone have the dimensions for the external, radiator-style oil coolers that were first fitted to the '83-84 Carrera 3.2?

I thought the 83-84s came with the 21? row brass tube type cooler, and the radiator ones came during the later years.

Why the question? As opposed to the factory ones, there are Mocal aftermarket ones on offer - try http://www.batinc.net (ouch on the prices for those downunder). I know there are plenty of others too. I understand it is more a matter of what fits...
The RX7 cooler is apparently a favoured (cheap) alternative (I'm getting one... I hope it works well). They look like this (ugly!): It is much narrower, but quite thick and long. That is a Mocal thermostat in the background too. I'm not helping the ugly factor with the blue hoses - but they are much cheaper and easier to work with than the braided hose.

Cam,
I've got an RX-7 oil cooler lined up also. I'm keen to see if they fit or not. They're a steal compared to the OEM "Carrera" unit!

Well, yes - it must because other people do it and it is on my car, but...
My car is in Christchurch (about 800-900km away) getting the work done, so I can't go and see it! The cooler definitely fits - it was mounted up this week, but I have no pictures yet and can't describe it. ![]() I will take and post plenty of pics when it comes back in another couple of weeks. Things to remember with the RX7 cooler (this is based on my discussion and memory - I didn't actually do it): (a) it has some sort of built in pressure limiting device (good, as if the thermostat ever fails and cold oil goes to the cooler it will stop it trying to blow itself up) (b) it needed the standard attachments removed and welded closed and new, -12 AN fittings welded on. This is partly personal preference (you could probably use an adaptor to the Mazda connectors). A pair of aluminium weld-on -12 male connectors are needed (about NZ$30-40 each, I think). Cooler was cheap - NZ$225. Hope this helps. Cam

OK SO what year RX7 Coolers will fit???? And is it worth it and fairly easily modified? How much better is this than the loop cooler (when it is working

Matt,
I don't think the Mazda cooler is intended for right 'wing' (fender) replacement of the trombone loop cooler! All of the pics I have seen have been installed in the bumper of RSR 2.8 (early cars) or IROC (RSR 3.0) style bumpers! I have one of the Mazda coolers with the AN-12 fittings on it, which will have to be cut off and replaced with AN-16 fittings for me to use ...
