Barback Longer Hose Inquisition

O.K., O.K., inquiring minds want to know...

I have several people asking me what the PN# is for the longer brake hose when one goes from low bars (below top tripletree) on a NON-ABS bike to above the tripletree with barbacks....since I never done it myself I don't know.

Let's help the bruthas out.

I know most guys n gals just go to steel brakelines at this point, so, any pertinent nfo on where and what and how would be helpful.

The bike :
1999 low bars with no abs

With the barbacks I used Goodridge lines
-right side is 26" ( excluding the fittings on each end )
-left side is "28"
-I ran double lines from a double banjo bolt on the m/c.

There is no need to add a new throtle cable if you tuck the cable behind the ignition key cylinder. Secure it losely with a zip tie. If it is allowed to remain in it's normal position it will cause the bike to race.
This is one area that was a little unclear when I did my research.
I was releived to know the cable didn't need replacing.

Real OEM has the lengths and part numbers Rapid, HERE is a link to their site. For those without ABS the numbers for the 2 different hoses are.
L=675MM 34322331902

L=639MM 34327651552

I did a search here at Pelican and saw where you asked the same question back in 2003, but no one was able to give you any part numbers. Hope this helps.

Here is information from Suburban Machinery for their R11S Handlebar Riser Kit:

On non ABS models a longer brake hose is required.
For Brembo calipers (99 thru Jan 2001) use BMW part # 34-32-2-331-915

For BMW EVO calipers (Feb 2001 thru today) use BMW part # 34-32-7-651-553

Gary,

Did you somehow disconnect the throttle cable inb order to tuck it back behind the ignition switch? Can't see how you did this with all the cables and wires behind it.

ploz,

do you have low bars or comfort bars (above tripleclamp)?
Low bars will require about -2" longer hose. Good time to go steel.
Otherewise no hose is needed with the high (comfort) bars.

hey all

i have an ABS 2004 R11S.

Had my dealer move the comfort bars moved under the triple-clamp a while ago. Am planning a trip from DC to NHampshire and have a set of barbacks to install.

I have a coupla questions:
--Am i likely to need longer throttle or brake lines to do this?
--Is this something I can likely do on my own without too much consternation?
--If so, your recommendations on torque values?

Justine,

If your bike came form the factory with ABS you should be good to go.

Most questions can be sorted out if you go to my webpage:

I designed these and the worked for my 2001 R1100SA.
My bike has ABS and comfort bars from the factory.
Everyone else sorted out their problems themselves.

Consensus is that you won't need anything if you have ABS.
That said, this month I had a guy ask if he could return his set because he couldn't get his throttle cables to work.
This was the first ever out of maybe 400 sets...odd, yet weird...

All the experience with installing the barbacks is from the guys who've ordered them. There is some discussion about the need for an accelerator cable. One guy said you need to buy one, then someone figured out that re-routing gave it more slack. Read the entire discussion.

Suffice to say, if your '04 ABS bike should be a snap, especially if it came with comfort bars (above the top tripleclamp.)

There are two throttle cable lengths depending on which bars your bike came with. I installed the longer cable on my wife's 03 Prep as the shorter length didn't cut it with the KRS bars she used for awhile.

i've never actually pulled the triple clamp off a bike. i plan to borrow a torque wrench. any stuoid pet tricks i should avoid?

Justin, no need to pull the top tripletree. You'll be loosening the top and bottom clamp screws (bolts) and sliding the fork tubes up thru the clamps far enough to accept the bars or barbacks.
Please be careful to re-torque everything to spec....but ofcourse we're not qualified to give you professional advice.

Below the tripple to barbacks: If you planning to go steel (and why not) I found getting a Spiegler r1100s kit and ordering 80MM longer than stock for the top hose is about perfect (a tiny bit on the long side). You could get away with 75MM.
