R1200S Tank Bag
Anyone who owns this bag, what do you think? Do you like it?
I took my first ride with this tank bag this morning, and I'm not sure what I think about it. It seems pretty big, and in the way a bit. For a long trip it could be useful for gear, but day to day it could get annoying. Anyone have the small tail bag from BMW? How does it mount?

I haven't seen a small BMW tail bag. Where did you see it?

Its not really a small tail bag, but they call it that. Its smaller than the bigger one they offer.

Just put on this Ztechnik storage pod I got from A&S. I think it looks really good on the bike:
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It's built out of the same stiff foam that the R1100S factory tankbag is made of. Open the lid and there's a mezzanine section with three zippered pouches. ![]() Under the middle layer is the basement with the straps coming through from the bottom. ![]() The middle layer is velcro'd at the hinge to the main pod and can be removed. ![]()

I see you have extra hardware on your bike. Is that for the hard cases?
Did that hardware come with the bike or was it installed after? I guess you have to drill?

That's for the hardbags, an option. You have to drill through the bodywork for the upper pin to go through. There's a mark for the hole on the inside.

The tank bag is definitely ginormous, but I'm really liking it. I often like to carry a large camera, maybe an extra lens. There's plenty of room and then some, like if you peel off a jacket. I don't mind my chest resting on it, either. The factory R1100S tankbag got worn from me rubbing into it, too. There's definitely days I don't need it, and it does spoil the looks of the bike some. That's why I got the tailbag for light days.

I've grown to really like my RKA tailbag. Holds my rain suit, glasses, camera, phone, flashlight, with room for paperwork. Not too big either.....just right for non-touring duties. Fastens easy/comes off easy. Rain fly is $9 extra.

I posted my thoughts a while ago:
R12S: BMW Tankrucksack I like it. It doesn't get in the way at all. I just finished a 3200 mile tour with it and it performed great. It is very easy to remove for fuel and has left zero scratches of any kind on the bike. Unlike, somehow, the insides of my legs on the sides of the tank. I would like to have a second, smaller tankbag as well. Search is still on for that.

I've been through First Gear, Marsee, and the BMW tank bag (all very different sizes, the BMW one the largest). All I'll say, is get the BMW one first: It lasts the longest, it's waterproof on it's own (great for my DLSR), and it's never in the way.
I have the Z-Technik clutch mount for my Zumo 660, and I can slightly adjust the large BMW tank bag to see all of the Zumo. When and if the CF redo of my bike happens, the red Axio tail bag will be sold, and I'll buy this Z one for my small tail. I have the BMW 19L tail bag for longer trips, where I go beyond the saddle bags. It fits better and hold the laptop and more, and it's waterproof.

Wolfman tail bags and tank bags need rain covers. The BMW bags do NOT! Over my 3 year ownership of the BMW tank bag, it's price is meaningless. I never have to plan on using the damn rain cover, and the stuff inside never gets wet.
With Phoenix @ 1200 above sea level, and Flagstaff @ 7000-8000 above, that's priceless. It could be "dry as a bone" in Phoenix, and pouring in Flagstaff, suddenly. I only have to worry about all those idiot cage drivers on the same roads. With one less thing to worry about, that's priceless, as well.

Moreover, Zumo 660 snaps off into tank bag where cover is, and click, click, on back, and disengage front lever, off. On mine I have to unplug the bag's inside electronics.
