Clutch still getting stuck
i checked my records... i replaced the clutch master cylinder last year... im thinking its not the slave cylinder, because the brake fluid has been at the same level, and no signs of fluid in the carpet. ive even added extra fluid and no sign of improvement. Also the spring is still engaged so its not that.
if i rest my foot, just the slightest bit on the clutch, i can feel it being grabbed, and it is pulled all the way down. i have to dig my foot behind it and pull it up, real annoying.. but most of the time it just comes back up only half way. Any suggestions? i was thinking of bleeding the brake fluid, any easy way to do that?? thanks

Bleed the clutch hydraulics using a motive power bleeder, while the rear end of the car is about 2 feet higher than the front of the car (think jackstands).

Have you checked the clutch pedal linkage? I had something like this happen years ago where the clutch pedal would stick in a certain spot. Turned out to be the clutch pedal linkage was binding.
I crawled into the footwell with a can of PBBlaster(?) and some 3 in one oil. Sprayed the joints one by one and tried the clutch till I found which one it was. A few drops of 3 in one oil and it hasn't given me trouble since. Hope it helps

The bleeder is on the top of the slave next to the starter. It is possible to open the bleeder without removing the starter but its much easier if you remove the starter. I just went through what you did. It ended up being the clutch disk. The peddle would stay on the floor. Everything else was ok. If (when) you pull the starter look for friction material in the bottom of the bell housing.

Derrik!
You did the master cylinder last year you said. Why did´nt you do the slave cylider as well?? Do that as a first job here, then flush the entire system, bleed and you will be fine. Look at the picture here and you can see the coiled spring that will keep your pedal down when you have this kind of issue. The spring is to the right of the fuse board.Do notremove the spring. It´s a h......l to put back and there is no need to do that. So, change the slave. Rolf 944 - 84 NA

I have the same problem now with my 86 951. Whenever i tap the the pedal it just goes down or if slowly let off the clutch it will go back down. I tried to bleed the system 4 days ago. I took out the started and lifted the rear higher and had a friend pump and depress the pedal. After severval tries it would still have the same problem where if you pump it quickly it would be fine but slowly the pedal would go down by it self and the fluid level in the resevior would rise as it went down. However if he pumped quick and it was fine the fluid would remain at the same level, it would only rise if it went down by itself....I thick its the slave cylinder... Anyone have previous experience with this that can shed some light on us????lol..........

I just replaced a slave cylinder for the exact reason adrian1.
And it wasn't even leaking enough to see any fluid under the car. And let's be clear, because the first post in this thread seems to have it backwards: the master cylinder is under the hood by the brake reservoir. When it goes bad, you often see fluid on your carpet. The slave cylinder is in the bell housing on the left side of the starter. You usually see fluid in your driveway when this one goes bad. And if you're changing either, change both - it's just a good idea. And, as mentioned, spend the few bucks on a motive power bleeder. You can't get the same pedal feel with anything else (other than a professional pressure bleeder). While you're doing this, just change all of the fluid in the system out - brakes and clutch. It won't take more than a gallon - probably much less once you get good at bleeding. |

Not always - when mine went I only discovered it because I was swapping the beige carpet interior for black. When I lifted the carpeting I discovered fluid UNDER the carpet where it had leaked down at the point of entry in the firewall. Because the carpeting is waterproofed on the back I didn't discover it until quite by chance. Worth sticking your finger right up under the point of entry to see if there's fluid leaking.

You can measure you clutch friction disk wear by removing the inspection hole cover.
Check on www.clarks-garage.com and look under "Clutch Disk Wear Check" for the procedure. Speedy

Word of caution - when I replaced my master I THOUGHT I was having a hard time getting everything bled. I couldn't get the clutch pedal to return more than an inch or so. Turns out I didn't adjust the clutch linkage properly - I shortened it up and everything has been great for 3 or 4k miles now. So make sure you measure the length of that rod/linkage better than I did when you take out the old master and swap the linkage to the new one. |
