10 Speaker Sytem - Anyone have pics?`
Hi all,
I am interested in what was done to the door/rear seat panels with 10 speaker sound system. Do any of you who have this option have some pics of the door panels, speakers, and rear seat panels available? I am also wondering how they wired this whole thing together. Did they use the existing harnesses in the door panels, or did they have to add some new looms? TIA, Keith

What are you looking for? I've added the 10 speaker system to mine, but I ran all new wires....dont trust the factory wires.

My '88 did not have the 10 speaker option but the wiring harness is already set up for the extra speakers. Also, once you remove your rear panels, you will find a 6" hole for the bass speaker that is covered by a metal plate that the factory installed. This just unscrews and your set. The factory has a smaller plate that covers the 4x6 when using the 6" bass and tweeter setup.
I installed an amplifier in the rear well. Here are some photos of what I've collected...but not installed yet: My new rear speakers: ] ![]() I bought these from the dealer (thru Pelican). The only problem is that they didn't come with screws and Porsche dosen't carry them - weird size...hard to find. ![]() The Rear Grills. The bass speaker is only covered 1/2 way by the grill. ![]() Back side of the rear grills:

Thanks guys.
I am looking at getting some parts, or possibly all of the 10 speaker setup, and want to know what is there, how it hooks up, and what else to expect. I have an aftermarket Blaupunkt stereo in the car and am wondering how this will interface with these speakers. From what I have heard, the door panel pods contain amplifiers as well as speakers, so I know that these will require more than just a pair of speaker wires to work. I was wondering if the 12V is already available in the existing harnesses, or would have to be routed separately. It sounds like the existing harnesses have everything needed? I know that the door panels are different, with the 10 speaker system not having the cutouts in the lower front for the standard 4x6 speakers. I was wondering what else is different, including with the rear seat panels? The rear panels with the new grills: Was it an easy mod to the rear panels to use the grills, just cut out the holes and install, or more involved? I am a bit confused by your "4x6" comment - is the bass speaker in a different location than the 4x6 was, and you put a plate over the 4x6 area? Also, sounds like you got the speakers and grills straight from Pelican, Porsche OEM replacements? How much $$$$$$$$ was this, if you don't mind me asking? Where are the tweeters installed; from what I have heard, there are sets both in the front and rear panels? Thanks again, Keith

The rear panels just get a half circle cut out for the bass speaker and a small circle for the tweeter (which you can see in my teenie pic).
The grills thru pelican were not that expensive. I beleive they were $45 each. I will post a pic tomorrow regarding the 4x6 cover piece (I have a photo on my work computer). Basically, the bass hole is off to the side of the existing 4x6 hole (they over lap a little). There is a metal plate that screws onto the 6" woofer that covers the 4x6 spot or ther is a metal plate that covers the woofer hole - depends on your setup (4x6 or components). I got the 4x6 coverup plate on eBay and they are ocasionally for sale - search for 968 speakers. The front door component setup does not have amplifiers in the doors. They have a crossover that looks like a small amp but it's just a crossover that seperates bass frequencies from treble. I personally don't like the front door setup. I purchased the factory speaker boxes for the front doors and it's really cheap. I feel that a good set of 4x6's is a good match with the upgraded rears. However, I am still looking for the front door tweeters and grills - this will definately add quality to the sound as the treble is more focused to your ears - rather than coming from the bottom of the doors. I've looked for sperates that include a tweeter and 4x6 bass but I don't think any such thing exists. |

One more thing....the rear tweeter is mounted directly into the grill but you still need a circle cutout in the panel for the back of the speaker. See photo of the back of the rear grills:
My picture has one of my tweeters next to the factory tweeter - but you only use one:

one of my 968s has the 10 speaker option - it is wired for that only - my other one has a 6 speaker setup - no wiring for the 10 speaker setup and only for the 6

So I had some time to dig into PET on this this morning. The premium sound system speakers are composed of the following:
Front tweeter (2) 944 645 427 00 Mounting screw (4) N 013 958 7 Front tweeter cover L (1) 944 645 431 00 01C (Black) Front tweeter cover R (1) 944 645 432 00 01C (Black) Front woofer (2) 944 645 429 00 Front mid range speaker (2) 944 645 419 00 Oval sheet metal screw (10) 900 143 031 02 (4.2x9.5mm) Crossover (2) 944 645 437 00 Rear woofer (2) 944 645 425 00 Bushing for R woofer (8) 477 035 375 Washer for R woofer (8) 900 025 002 02 (4.3mm) Self-tapping screw (16) N 013 953 2 (2.9x9.5mm) Rear tweeter/grill L (1) 944 645 045 00 01C (Black) Rear tweeter/grill R (1) 944 645 046 00 01C (Black) Oval head screw for rear grill (16) 999 919 032 02 (3.5x10mm) Front pod retaining frame L (1) 944 555 043 00 Front pod retaining frame R (1) 944 555 044 00 Retaining bracket for retaining frame (4) 944 531 243 00 Rear speaker mounting adapter L (1) 944 504 611 01 Rear speaker mounting adapter R (1) 944 504 612 01 Front door panel L (1) 944 555 017 03 NU3 Front door panel R (1) 944 555 018 03 NU3 Door panel shelf L (1) 944 555 043 00 2FR Door panel shelf R (1) 944 555 044 00 2FR Rear side panel L (1) 944 555 022 08 05T Rear side panel R (1) 944 555 022 09 05T The rear tweeters are integral to the speaker grill, which is what you show in your picture TidyBuoy. Apparently some if not all of this stuff is still available from Porsche. What items are not available, if you know of any? Also, it looks like this stuff might be available in some sort of kit form, based upon your picture. Did you get all of this stuff individually, or order some kind of package? It looks like the front tweeters might also be available (PN 944 645 427 00). I see no mention of the grill covers for the speaker pod; what did you do for those? I am getting a used set of (I think) most of this stuff from Brian944Turbo, plus one damaged front door panel for them. It will be interesting to see if/how it all goes together ![]() ![]() Thanks for the help, Keith

Ditch the factory speakers. By now they aren't going to be that good anyway.
Blaupunkt has some, that fit good. They are discontinuted though, but you can get them cheap on evilbay. Great for the front doors, even without an extra amp. THC540. Nice setup for the doors. Here are a bunch of pictures as well. http://s155.photobucket.com/albums/s288/hpservertech/944/Stereo/ I also have a wiring document that I did for this as well that I could e-mail you. Might help you out some. The best thing to do is get the 10 speaker setup, but replace all the factory speakers and run all new wiring. Your better off going with a 4 channel amp for this as well, but any decent headunit should be ok as well.

slightly OT, but does anybody know if you can bolt the 10 speaker door pods up to an early door? Obviously some wiring would be required to make speakers in there work, but I'm wondering if I could replace my armrest and storage pocket with a 10 speaker armrest and speaker pod and have it fasten securely and not look like crap
Thanks |

after having played with this stuff a bit (couldn't help it - too many years as a touring sound engineer), i have found that the factory speakers aren't really that bad - not great, but not that bad - the tweeters are actually pretty darned good
but, the head unit is horrible, as are the factory amps - once i cleaned up the power, it was pretty easy to change crossover points, deaden the area behind the speakers, and get decent sound - no bottom end, but pretty clean sound i would rethink using the factory head unit, and get something with either a 5 band parametric eq, or at least an 11 band graphic eq (16 would be better), and a REAL 25watts/ch RMS - otherwise, you are polishing a turd - you're still probably going to want a sub too |

Flash, regarding using 968 premium sound system in a 944: I just got off the phone with someone at 20th St Auto who had a 968 with the 10/12 speaker sytsem, and he indicated that the rear seat bass woofer has an amplifier built in to it. Did you find that on your car(s)? He also mentioned something about 6-1/4" vs. 5-1/4" size for the 968 vs. 944 rears.
I was looking for if they might have some parts, and one option was to go with a 968 system. I also put a feeler into my local Porsche dealer to determine which of the parts above are still available. Thanks for the pictures HP, they help a lot. Keith

the rears do have their own amp in the 10 speaker setup - the cab version (which i have) is a 4" woofer and a 1" tweeter - there is a tiny amp inside the enclosure that houses all of it
i believe the hatchback version is similar, but with a larger woofer and no enclosure i snatched those out of the one car and put them in another - the previous owner had already cannibalised the fronts in that car, so i installed an entirely new system there i bypassed that amp, changed the crossover, deadened the enclosure, and added my own amp - very nice for rear fill the oem amp that was under the seat is now sitting in a box in a cabinet in my garage none of the oem setup would produce a lot of bottom end though - i am cutting the rears off at 125@12db/oct and the fronts at 60@12db/oct - i would have cut the fronts off higher if i had left them stock, but i am using some kenwood separates up there now - all four channels are being driven by a sony explode amp and fed by a pioneer premier deh980bt deck |

If anyone has any pictures of a door setup like in the diagram above, I'd like to see them. I'm thinking about modifying my door panels to accept a component speaker set, and I'd like to see where the engineers at Porsche found it best to put the tweeters.

What did you guys do for #5 in the diagram ? The small tweeter in the upper door ? My driver side was blown so I switch it with the passenger side. I also put a tweeter I had laying around in the passenger side and it sucks the Nokia is actually pretty good for a German car!
10 SPEAKER OEM MY SETUP SO FAR ALPINE FRONT ALPINE REARS RIPPED OUT THE OLD #10'S I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT SIZE THESE ARE ? WOULD LOVE TO KNOW SO I COULD BUY SOME. TRUNK 12 KENWOOD IN A SLIM BOX WITH ALPINE 400 WATT AMP-NOT DONE WITH THE WIRING YET. GERMAN CARS ARE KNOWN TO LACK HIGHS AND LOWS, BUT HAVE A GOOD MID SETUP....FOR SOME REASON THEY STILL CANNOT GET THIS RIGHT, EVEN WITH THE NEW PORSCHE'S AND BMW'S.

Thoen, look at Post #8. The parts you are looking are the "Door Panel Shelf" units that only go for $435 each new. You can get them from Pelican or Porsche, maybe.
CK, #5 if you look up the part number here on Pelican is available as a special order, for something like $40. Or get it from your Porsche dealer. Keith
