Where do you drift at? I've seen guys drift their 240's, but I haven't seen anyone drift a 944. It'd be interesting to see one.

i found it very easy to do some drifting today.... probably because of all the darn sand on the road

Drive carefully, northeasterners...

What kind of tires are ideal for drifting. I bet you drifters use some thin tires with hard rubber. Cuz my 225's stick like glue and without really dumping the old clutch they will never break louse. Ofcourse on sand and Ice it seems like I have 1000hp!!

what do you use 185 195 205?

here in NZ the cars that seem to be the weapons of choice are nissan 200sx, s180sx, S13/ S14/ S15 silvias, heaps of cefiros and skylines, the odd supra or late model RX7, a handful of AE86 trueno's/ levin's.

I haven't seen a 944/ 951 drift here but i've seen footage of a red 951 drifting in Aussie on the Mischief 3000 dvd

you still need decent tyres and decent traction. most serious drifters here are in excess of 300rwhp so actually breaking traction isn't an issue, its maintaining the drift.

Rage, of all the times I've seen your cars pics and videos, I still love it. ;P

When my 951 grows up, it wants to be just like yours (except in maritime blue).

when you first start out you run junk in the back and stock in the front than sticky tires in the front and mild in the back than eventually sticky tires on front and back but you need the power. I just run basic tires. I put up this post because the 944 is like a perfect drift car and no one really seams to be using them to drift. Great handleing, lightweight, rwd are basically all you need. My 944 is blast to go sideways with and will be posting my vid as soon as i can get footage on my friends digital camera. If you dont drift now i encourage you to. Its alot of fun and requires and develops great car control. If you dont want to hit up your local parking lot then find event in your area. If your in jersey you can go to englishtown raceway. Go to clubloose.com for a schedule.

Better keep an extra tranny on hand if you drift.
These trannys dont seem to hold up very good.

Just curious, is it still possible to get a little sideways without a LSD? Also what is general technique to get a 944 sideways. I would imagine tough to do any methods which utilize the cars power. I have seen plenty of drift movies and watched the Drift Bible with Tsyuchia explaining the different methods. I would figure the 'feint' method would work best for someone not really to serious about learning. Basically steering in the opposite direction you want to go ithen quickly steering to the direction you want to go in. Throws the suspension balance off. What type of speeds are necceasry to try something like this? Something to mess around with in an open parking lot at night .

I think that was that gearhead420 guy or something like that. He had a sucky attitude and ended up buying a honda, if I remember correctly.

My first drift turned into a 360 that happened so fast it took me completely by surprise. Too fast, wet road, 90 degree corner made for a bad combo. I think that the car's balance works for you as long as you're within its capabilities, but once you lose traction, either end can be the front. It swapped ends faster than I could think it was swapping ends. Since then I've drifted it quite a few times - and not just on snow and ice! But I'm careful to make sure I don't cross that threshold.

The 944 is one of the best-balanced sports cars ever produced, but this balance comes at a price -- there is an awful lot of weight riding on those rear axles

Whereas the weight isn't BEHIND the axles as it is in the 911, the 944's transmission rests squarely between the wheels, which makes for an almost perfectly-balanced sports car that also has a potential pendulum effect waiting to happen if the rear breaks traction. When the rear of the 944 kicks out, it feels like the weight is gradually gaining momentum until, alas, it is too late to reign in... that's why is important to know what the rear of the car is doing at all times.

Not as tail happy as the 911, obviously, but it IS still a Porsche.
